Is it Possible to Tow With 1-5/8

Updated 09/27/2017 | Published 09/26/2017

Question:

It appears that I have an unusual hitch on my 1992 Jeep Wrangler YJ. The receiver has a 1-5/8 inch receiver and not a standard 2 inch or 1-1/4. I ordered the 1 1/4inch ball mount because my 2 inch ball mount was too large and just assumed therefore that it required a 1-1/4inch model. I have not seen any 1-5/8 inch ball mounts listed on etrailer? My hitch was on the vehicle when I purchased it used - it has no markings on it to identify manufacturer or class. Perhaps this was an original hitch from the 1990s ... I have only used the hitch previously for a bike rack using a brophy HT58 adapter that came with the vehicle. Can you recommend any solution for me to be able to tow with this hitch?

Expert Reply:

The best solution for you is going to be simply replacing that hitch with a new one, the Curt # 13657, which is a fit for '92 YJ's with the exception of Renegade models. The Curt is a Class III hitch that has a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs, tongue weight capacity of 350 lbs, and more importantly, a 2" receiver opening.

To complete your towing setup you would want a 4-flat trailer connector # 118356, ball mount # C45030, 2" hitch ball # 63845 and pin and clip # C21500.

I've added links to video reviews of these products for you to take a look at as well.
