According to the owner's manual, the towing capacity of your 2008 Ford Explorer Sport Track is going to depend on your engine and hitch. With the standard factory Class II hitch you can tow 3,500 lbs with a 350 lb tongue weight regardless of engine. However, if you have a Class III or IV hitch, you can tow 5,000 lbs (4.0L engine) or 7,000 lbs (4.6L engine) with a tongue weight of 500 lbs. However, it is important to know what the maximum capacity of your hitch is; the lowest capacity of your vehicle or hitch is going to be the number you'll want to follow.
To add a 4-flat connector to your factory 7-way you would want to use the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package - 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C55384. If you are going to be towing, I recommend checking out Ball Mount Kit # 989900, which will fulfill your towing needs in one tidy package; two ball mounts – one with a 3/4” rise or 2” drop and the other with a 2-3/4” rise or 4” drop, a 1-7/8” hitch ball, a 2” hitch ball and a pin and clip. To find out if this is the correct rise or drop you need, please refer to the help article on choosing the correct ball mount that I've linked for you.
