2-Inch Ball Straight Tongue Coupler for Home-Built Ice House Trailer with 2-1/2-Inch-Wide Tongue

Question:
My home built Ice House has a Fulton 1 7/8inch hitch coupler on it, the distance between the side holes is 2 1/4inch and 1inch down from the Top to hole centers the width of my tongue is 2 1/2. I would like to upgrade this hitch coupler to a 2inch so it is the same as my other trailers and I dont have to switch the ball out or use a multi ball system. I only seem able to find ones that have a 3inch or 3 1/8inch dist. between holes is there a coupler that will just bolt on or do I need to drill the tongue or coupler? If I need to drill is it safer to drill the coupler or the trailer tongue?

Expert Reply:
We have three straight-tongue trailer couplers like # CT-2002-Z that will fit a 2-inch ball and mount on a 2-1/2-inch wide channel tongue. All of these are rated for 3500-lbs and can be seen on the linked page.
If you need to drill a hole in either the trailer tongue (to match the coupler) or in the new coupler (to match the hole in the trailer tongue) it is kind of a toss up since the home-built trailer has no warranty from a manufacturer. But since the coupler is a fairly inexpensive item to replace, if this becomes necessary, I would drill the coupler. This will, of course, void the coupler's 3-year warranty.
So, its really your call.
