Installing Trailer Lighting Reverse Wire To Add 5 Way Function To 4-Way Flat Connector

Updated 07/03/2017 | Published 07/01/2017

Question:

I purchased the Hopkins 47515 4 flat to 5 flat. I have a 2008 Honda Pilot. The reverse light is in the hatch. Where can I tap into the reverse wire, other than the hatch, so that the trailer surge brakes will respond? What if I dont even make this connection? Am I hurting anything? There is a manual lock out tab on the trailer for use when backing.

Since there is a manual lockout, you are not losing anything except for reverse lights is you were to choose to use that feature. If you choose to install the reverse power wire, I recommend tracing the wire from your hatch to its location outside your hatch. You can use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to test wires for signal. You don't need to start the engine for this feature, just set your parking brake, put the ignition to ACC and shift into reverse.
