Question:
Could you elaborate on the trimming of the heat shield, perhaps a link to a video or what it supposed to look like after its trimmed.

The heat shield does not need to be trimmed when installing the Curt trailer hitch # C13303 on the 2017 BMW X1.
If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # EBMK4. It comes with a ball mount with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop, interchangeable ball set, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
For a trailer wiring harness you can use # 118717 to add a 4-Way flat connector to the rear of the vehicle. I have linked a video showing how it installs as well.
