Question:
I just purchased a 2017 Toyota Rav 4. I need a bike rack which will carry two bikes which weigh about 38 pounds a piece. I cannot figure out which bike racks would work. I like the looks of the Swagman racks, but a lot of them will not carry the weight of my two bikes. Can you help?

Expert Reply:
For a hitch-mounted bike rack to transport your two bikes with your 2017 Toyota RAV4, I recommend looking at the Swagman Chinook 2 Bike Platform Rack # S64683. This is a great bike rack that has a similar platform-design to the Swagman # S64650 referenced in your question but with a weight capacity of 45 pounds per bike.
This particular rack has a few really nice features, such as its ability to tilt down with the bikes still loaded for easy rear cargo access and the included, built-in locks to secure both the bikes to the rack and the rack to your vehicle. The rack is compatible with both 1-1/4 inch and 2 inch trailer hitch receivers.
For a more economical option, I recommend the Curt 2 Bike Platform Rack # C18085. This is also a platform-style rack with a weight capacity of 45 pounds per bike. The rack can be folded up against the vehicle when not in use and can be tilted away for rear cargo access. I recommend adding the cable lock # C23666 to secure your bikes to the rack.
I have attached demonstration videos for both of these racks as well as the installation instructions for you to check out.
