Question:
Have a 2012 Audi Q5 and 2012 Volvo XC60 with 235-60-18 tires. Trying to purchase snow chains for either of the vehicles. Both user manuals say we need the $500+ zero clearance chains nothing on back of tire. I would really like to not pay that much for the limited use I will get from them and just get some cable chains. Do you have any guidance?

The Glacier Cable Chains # PW1046 are confirmed to fit the 235/60-18 sized tires on both your vehicles. They are Class S compatible, meaning they have at least 37 mm of clearance between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well and at least 15 mm between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle.
I can't recommend you go against your owner's manuals but these chains will fit the tire size.
