Rear Door Access on 2011 Toyota RAV4 When Using Swagman Chinook 2 Bike Platform Rack S64683

Updated 07/22/2020 | Published 02/22/2017

Question:

I am curious if I am able to open my rear door on my 2011 Toyota Rav4. This has the door that opens from the side 5th door.

When the Swagman Chinook 2 Bike Platform Rack # S64683 is tilted down with a bike loaded you will not be able to open the side-opening rear door on your RAV4. On a vehicle with a vertical rear hatch, like the Rogue shown in the linked video, you can tilt the loaded rack down as shown to open that hatch. But if the rack is not loaded with bikes, and you have the mast tilted down AND tilt the whole empty rack down you would be able to open the side-opening door.

I have a 2011 Toyota RAV4 Sport, whose rear door swings open horizontally. Will the Swagman XTC2 allow the door to swing open when unloaded and folded down? I have exactly ten inches from the center of my hitch to the bottom of the open door.

When the Swagman XTC-2 Rack # S64670 is folded down there's a height of just about 10-1/2" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the top of the assembly. It looks like it will be just a tiny bit too high to allow clearance for the rear door on your RAV4. A better option would be with the Swagman Chinook # S64683, which can actually tilt back to allow for more clearance.
