Are Fans in Derale Radiator Fan # D16927 Recessed Into the Shroud, Available Fans without Shroud

Updated 01/11/2011 | Published 01/09/2011

Question:

The shroud width of the Derale 16927 is 2. Does the fan mount directly to the shroud, or does it sit partially inside the shroud? I only have ~3 of clearance to work with. From what I can tell, these fans are not sold individually, but they have all the features that I want. Im considering cutting down the shroud by an inch, or just making brackets to mount the fans without a shroud. Thank you for your help!

The fans are mounted to the surface of the shroud on Derale Radiator Fan, # D16927, for a total depth of 3-3/4 inches, but there is little to no extra shroud available to trim back (only about 5/8 of an inch at most), as the fan does protrude a little into the shroud. It is not recommended to modify the part as it will void the warranty and possibly cause unwanted performance.

Fans can be purchased without the shroud attached. Take a look at the Derale Fan, # D18214. This fan can be mounted as a pusher or puller and is a mere 2-5/8 inches thick. It also comes with plastic rods and pads for mounting. Two of these would provide the same CFM rating as the two fans in D16927. You would then just need a switch like Derale Premium, Single-Stage Thermostat Fan Control, # D16735, for automatic operation.

The fans used in D16927 are Derale high Output Fan # D16925, which are 3-1/8 inches deep. It comes with mounting hardware but the relay harness is not included.
