Helpful Expert Reply:
The load range is essentially the strength of a tire and correlates to a specific number of tire plies and a load pressure. With a tandem axle 9,500 pound trailer, and rims that have a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern, your best bet is go with load range D, which is an 8 ply at 65 psi. The weight capacity will vary a little from tire to tire but many will be in the 2,500 pound range.
As for steel or aluminum the choice is yours. Aluminum wheels are generally more stylish and that could add some curb appeal to your trailer but they also bring the price up.
If you'd like I can recommend a specific tire and wheel combination for you. I'll just need your tire size.
