The DeeZee Tailgate Assist # DZ43203 fits 1997 and later model years of the Ford F-150 but not your 1996. However, Hopkins offers a tailgate lift assist product # 74211 that does fit your 1996 Ford F-150's tailgate.

The Hopkins system uses a torsion bar instead of a shock to take some of the weight off the tailgate for easier closing. You can see it in the linked video. You need to drill two holes during the installation.
