just purchased a new trailer. Brake lights and turn lights will not work. I have a Nissan Frontier and was told a need a special adaptor because my brake and turn bulbs are different in the truck

Most likely you have a some missing or blown relays on your Nissan Frontier as this is a fairly common issue.
The relays are available in the Curt Relay Kit # C57000. The blue relays control the turn signals, and it sounds like that's what you're missing. I've linked you to a photo showing where the relays are usually located, and also to a video showing the same thing.
