Question:
I am looking for a bike rack for two hybrid bikes. One has a slanted top bar and the other is a step thru. I like the platform style of the Thule T2 but it is either a 2inch or 1 1/4inch not both. I presently have a Highlander with a 2inch hitch but I am planning to change cars and may only have a 1 1/4inch option. Is there a way to convert the 2inch to a 1 1/4inch in the future? I would consider the Thule Helium 3 as a possible alternative. For a hanging type carrier I may need two top bar adapters which I am not too excited about. Does this hitch wedge tight into both hitch sizes? Storage is a problem in a small condo. Which of the two folds for hanging on a storage closet wall with the least projection from the wall? Approx how much would they project? Any other suggestions? Thank you.

The Thule T2 Pro Platform Bike Rack will fit your Toyota Highlander, but you are correct, the T2 only comes as a 2" or 1-1/4" option. One way to ensure this rack will fit on your current vehicle and your next vehicle is to get the 1-1/4" Model, # TH9045, and the MaxxTow Trailer Hitch Receiver Reducer # MT70033. This reducer will allow you to use the bike rack on your current 2" hitch and later on a 1-1/4" hitch but will reduce the hitch's weight capacity by 50 percent. the Brophy Reducer # HT02 comes with a pin and clip and does not effect the hitch's weight capacity. This rack will project about 22 inches from the wall when hung up. If you were to go with this option, you will also need a Pin and Clip # PC3.
Another option is the Kuat Transfer Platform Rack # KU74FR which can transfer between 1-1/4" and 2" hitches with ease. This rack can carry two bikes and is made from powder coated steel for durability and is corrosion resistant. This rack comes with a foot lever which lets you easily tilt the rack down to allow access to your rear cargo area, even with the bikes loaded. When kept in the folded down position, the rack will project about 12 inches from the wall. When folded up, it will project about 14 inches. So for your storage needs, the Kuat works best.
Based on your bike rack preferences, I would recommend the Kuat Transfer Platform Rack over the Thule Helium.
