Expert Reply:
The Curt Front Mount Hitch, # 31514, has a 9,000 lbs. maximum line pull. That is the gross load capacity when used as a straight line pull.
Straight line pull means that the winch cable must not exceed 15 degree angle up or down from horizontal or 45 degree angle left or right from straight ahead.
So the hitch will be strong enough to winch your Nissan Xterra.
I am sending a link to the instructions on the Curt front hitch which will show the installation and some information on winching with the hitch.
