Recommend an Electronic Brake Controller For 2007 Toyota 4Runner With Easy Install and Small Size

Updated 08/26/2010 | Published 08/25/2010

Question:

Hello. I have a 07 Toyota 4 Runner that did not come with a factory hitch. I installed an aftermarket Hidden Hitch hitch and now need to install an electric brake module. The vehicle has a harness plug by vehicles emergency brake. I would prefer as small a unit as is available to not have a cluttered installation. What do you recommend and do I need any other special wiring harness with the brake controller? Thanks for your time.

The Electronic Brake Controller that I would recommend for your 2007 Toyota 4Runner is the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Proportional Brake Controller # 90885 and the Toyota and Lexus Adapter, part # 3040-P.

You will also want to check to see if your vehicle has a 7-way connector installed. If your 2007 Toyota 4Runner has a 7-way connector installed then your installation will be complete. If you do not have a tow package or factory 7-way on your 4Runner you will need to install the Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit, part # ETBC7.

If you do not have a factory 4-way harness on your vehicle, you will need to install the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Trailer Connector, part # 119178KIT, before installing part # ETBC7, on your 2007 Toyota 4Runner.

I have linked a video of installation of Tekonsha Prodigy Brake Controller installation on a 2004 Toyota 4Runner that should be similar installation to your 2007 Toyota 4 Runner. I have also linked an FAQ on electronic brake controller installation below. I have also linked a video install of a part # ETBC7, on Ford Truck without tow package that may be good reference.
