According to the attached installation instructions for the trailer hitch I recommend, Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # 75673, the exhaust is lowered and then replaced when installing the hitch.
The instructions state that the process for lowering a single exhaust is duplicated for vehicles that have dual exhaust systems.
This is a Class lll hitch and it has a 2 inch receiver opening. I have attached a link to an installation video on a 2016 Outback Wagon you can check out. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the rear bumper is 5-1/2 inches. That is an important measurement when you are looking for any items to place in the hitch, like bike carriers, cargo carriers, etc.
If you plan on doing some towing I recommend the etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.
If the ball mount kit does not include a ball mount with the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, check out the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
If you need trailer wiring I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part # 118467. Just find the location points for this harness behind the side panel in the rear cargo area. This is shown in the link I have attached that shows how to install this harness.
the trailer hitch and wiring harness I recommended are not designed to work with the Outback Sport model.
I have attached a couple links to some of the hitch-mounted bike carriers and cargo carriers we offer. If you have any questions about a specific item please let me know and I will be happy to make some recommendations that will work for you.
