Question:
I have a 2008 toyota tacoma double cab. Just bought the thule bars and fit kit and installed them on my truck. The recommended distance between bars is 26 inches. I plan on transporting a kayak, 12 to 14 foot. Cani increase the distance to get more stability for the kayaks?

I spoke with my contact at Thule, and he said that the absolute maximum distance they recommend placing your crossbars is 36 inches. Recommendations fall anywhere between 24 - 36 inches.
Personally, the crossbars on my vehicle are 30 inches apart and my 9 foot kayak fits great. Initially I was worried the J-style carriers I was using would be too close together and not support enough of my kayak. But the kayak fit well at that distance for me.
