Would this be a good sturdy hitch for a small trailer 5x8. My car is a 02 Honda Civic. Mostly carrying two cayaks or trash to the dump.

If you have a 2 or 4 door Coupe or Sedan Civic, the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # C11204 will work great for you.
For a 1-7/8 inch hitch ball I recommend part # 19256 and for a 2 inch hitch ball I recommend part # 19258.
If you need trailer wiring I recommend part # 119178KIT. I have attached a link to an installation video for this harness you can check out.
