Question:

Ive been looking at getting the Swagman Trailhead 2 bike rack from etrailer. But was not sure which trailer mount to buy. As this would be an after market hitch installation I didnt want it to become to complicated or expensive as I am also looking to buy the bike rack. My Escape has no backup camera, so my only concern is that the forward tilt would lean far enough forward for me to access the trunk space. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

For your 2013 Ford Escape I recommend the Curt trailer hitch # C13186. This is a 2 inch receiver and will afford you more options for bike carriers and other accessories compared to a lower class hitch.

The Swagman Trailhead bike carrier # S63360 tilts at less than a 45 degree angle. While this might work to allow you to open the rear hatch on the Escape I cannot guarantee it. Also, the bikes would have to come off to tilt the rack down.

For a carrier that will allow you to tilt it out with the bikes loaded I recommend the Inno Tire Hold Bike Rack # INH142. I have linked a video showing how it works. The carrier does cost more than the Trailhead but if you need to be able to open that rear hatch with bikes loaded the Inno is one of the best options available.

You could also take a look at the Yakima FullSwing # Y02465. This is a hanging rack that swings away to the side, with the bikes loaded, so that it is out of your way to get to your hatch.
