Question:

The description indicates not for use with sun or moon roof. Can this item be installed on a 2009 VW Tiguan with factory side rails.

The Rhino-Rack Vortex Roof Rack you referenced is designed to fit the factory raised side rails on your 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan, but will not work if you have a sunroof installed.

I recommend the Thule WingBar Evo Roof Rack System for your vehicle. Thule does have a note of caution that the roof rack may interfere with the sunroof opening, so you will want to make sure you keep it closed when the roof rack is in place.

This roof rack features WingBar crossbars that are some of the quietest on the road. For this system you would need to order the bars, either # TH711200 for silver or # TH711220 for black, along with the Evo raised rail feet, part # TH710401.

When a roof rack is installed on a vehicle, it is always recommended to keep the sun or moon roof closed. They can be very noisy if open. If a sun roof is the style that extends above the roof line when open it could interfere with the roof rack. If the moon roof is the type that is inside the roof cavity when opened, it probably won't interfere with the roof rack but would certainly be noisy.
