It sounds like you are wanting to install a brake controller on your 2001 Chevrolet Silverado.
You can use a wiring harness like part # 3025-P to make the installation very simple. You just plug one end into the back of the brake controller and the other end into the brake control adapter plug located under the dash. I have attached a photo that shows where the vehicle adapter plug is located.
If you are hardwiring your brake controller here are the wiring functions for the brake controller. Black = 12-volt power
White = ground
Red = connects to cold side stop light wire on brake switch
Blue = output to 7-Way for trailer brakes.
You will want a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test the wiring on your truck for function when installing the brake controller.
