Can the Blue Ox Base Plate Safety Cables Have Chains Added to Tow a Jeep Out of a Mud Hole

Published 02/12/2015

Question:

i have a 2012 Jeep Liberty 4X4. i flat tow it behind my RV using this base plate. I also 4 wheel it when i can. my question is this: are the safety chain tabs strong enough to use as a recovery point in instances where i am off roading an may get stuck? can i use them to hook a chain and pull/winch the jeep out of a mudhole?

I contacted our representative at Blue Ox and the safety chains included in the Blue Ox base plate kit # BX1131 and the base plate themselves haven't been tested as a recovery point to pull a Jeep out of a mud hole.

I wouldn't recommend it and I think your best option is to get tow strap. It's inexpensive and will provide you a peace of mind when the time comes to safely pull a Jeep out of a mud hole.

A tow strap I recommend is the Erickson tow strap # EM59700 that has a break strength of 27,000 pounds. I also included a link showing you all the tow straps we currently offer.
