Installing New 7-Way Harness On Camping Trailer With Electric Brakes

Question:

I am restoring a camper trailer. I am having to do a total re-wire. The trailer has electric brakes. I purchased a new molded 7 way cable for the trailer side. My truck 2011 Explorer is factory wired with plug mounted from factory. I am also installing a 7 pin junction box for the connections. QUESTION: The new cable has a REDinch wire and the junction box is labeled as Red = Left Turn and Brown = Right Turn. But every diagram I see has Yellow as Left Turn and Green as Right Turn. Also the cable is labeled as Yellow = Aux. power but the diagrams show the aux. as Purple. So how am I to wire my trailer??? Thank you.

I have attached a helpful article that explains trailer wiring. You are correct that most diagrams do list the Yellow wire for the left turn and green for the right turn wiring. Since you are re-wiring the entire trailer you can easily make sure you run the wires to match your 2011 ford Explorer wiring.

You can test your Explorer wiring by using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993. Test each pin for function and not by color. Then match the pins on your trailer connector to the mating pins on your Explorer connector and run the wires to the appropriate locations.

If you do not have a brake controller I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part # 90885 and the Tekonsha Plug-In Adapter, part # 3035-P. You simply plug one end of the adapter into the back of your controller and the other end into the port located under the dash. I have attached an installation video you can check out.
