Say your truck has a gooseneck hitch for towing your horse trailer, but you want to go camping with your new fifth wheel. You could outfit your truck with a new fifth-wheel hitch that attaches to your existing gooseneck hitch, but that means having to move a heavy, bulky hitch into and out of your truck bed all the time.
You could also purchase an adapter that bolts onto your trailer's existing pin box. But adding a new component to your setup can keep your pin box from working how it was designed. King pin adapters can create a stiff ride and can even strain your fifth wheel's frame by adding too much height at the connection point.
A better option is to use this gooseneck-compatible pin box to easily tow your fifth-wheel trailer with your truck's gooseneck hitch. The box replaces your trailer's existing pin box, which means it's designed to act as a part of your trailer instead of simply bolting over your king pin like an adapter does.
If you've ever towed a fifth-wheel trailer before, you're no stranger to road shock. Driving over uneven terrain can result in a rigid, bumpy ride. And uncomfortable fore-and-aft chucking can occur when you're starting and stopping. When all of the motions combine, the road shock can even potentially damage your truck or trailer.
This Gen-Y Hitch torsion pin box is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the box, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.
Pivot points are built into the Gen-Y pin box adapter. This allows for movement between the box, which attaches to your trailer, and the coupler tube, which connects to the gooseneck hitch ball in your truck bed. When your trailer bounces or jerks, the coupler tube will move accordingly.
Built into the Gen-Y pin box are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the coupler end moves, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the coupler's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the rough shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.

Hello, everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Gen-Y Hitch Shock-Absorbing 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Pin Box for the Fabex and M&M 665 pin boxes. This has a 30,000 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now, this 5th-wheel-to-gooseneck adapter box will let you tow your 5th wheel trailer using your gooseneck hitch. This 5th wheel pin box will replace the Fabex or the M&M 665 factory pin box on your trailer. And if you noticed right up front here, it includes the mounting hardware that's needed to install this pin box to the trailer.
This pin box is made in the USA. Now, one note I do wanna mention, because this Gen-Y hitch may be shorter than the Fabex or the M&M 665 pin box, the clearance between your trailer and tow vehicle during turns might be reduced. Also, because this pin box is very heavy, we do recommend to have help around when installing this to your trailer. Again, the gross towing weight capacity is 30,000 pounds. The pin weight capacity range on this one is 2,500 to 4,500 pounds.
And the reason they have a pin box range or a pin weight range is because it's required, because of this design, the Gen-Y shock-absorbing design, to work correctly and ensure a nice smooth, steady ride. And the way it works, I wanna zoom in and talk about it. The technology functions like a torsion axle you can see here to limit transfer of road shock from the trailer to the truck and vice versa. It'll reduce chucking and rough fore-and-aft motion, and it limits bounce and jarring in the up-and-down motion. Now, built into this Gen-Y pin box, I wanna show you.
I happen to have a cutaway of what it looks like that's on the inside of the pin box right here. But if you look at this cutaway, it has these tubes with these inner bars here that are surrounded by rubber cords. So basically, what happens is as the coupler end moves, these inner bars right here will twist inside the tubes, attempting to follow the coupler's motion. But the rubber cords that surround it prevent those bars from twisting too far. So as each bar turns, those cords compress to absorb the rough shock.
So it means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck. The other nice thing about this type of system is there's no air bags to maintain, and it has fewer moving parts to repair or replace than some of the other shock-absorbing solutions that are out there. And the way this attaches is, this coupler attaches to your truck's gooseneck hitch ball using this SnapLatch design, you can see this red latch right here. The SnapLatch lever will basically, automatically, it engages when your hitch ball is in the socket. And I wanted to demonstrate that, I happen to pull out a gooseneck ball here. So you can see we have it in the open position, the latches. So you can see, when you get over your gooseneck ball and you go to connect, you can see that once it goes down far enough, that latch automatically latches on, and you're hooked up ready to go. So basically, and then if you are ready to disengage, all you have to do is pull the cable. And I wanted to zoom out just to show you that cable. You can see the end right over here, so you can still be outside the truck. And when you're ready to disengage, all you have to do is just pull this cable. And when you do that, you'll notice it locks into the open position. And you'll notice the ball comes right out. It detaches pretty easily, and then it's in the open position ready to hook up again. Now, the average break in period for this hitch is a 1,000 miles. If you noticed on the sides right here and on the other side, they have these cross-shaped holes on both sides, and that provides you attachment points for safety chains. Now, the safety chains are not included, we do sell those separately. This hitch is a heavy-duty steel construction, has a nice silver powder coat finish on it to resist wear and corrosion. And what's nice is the Gen-Y products are known to be overbuilt, so they're really strong. That's why they're heavy, and they hold up well over time. This part is made in the USA.
