A Safe Ride is a Comfortable Ride

If you're looking for the best tie-downs for your camper, frame-mounted is the way to go. The frame is the most solid part of your entire vehicle, so it just makes sense to attach your camper to something that's not going to warp, bend, or twist. Even more importantly, the camper's center of gravity will sit lower and its weight will be spread across the entire bed. This avoids a top-heavy load perched on top of your bed rails that's liable to sway and get pushed around by crosswinds. The camper's not going to shift or slide around while you drive; it's going to stay put, and your truck is going to handle just like it does without a camper.

Quick Tip: If you have a plastic or spray-in bed liner, it's important that you use a rubber mat under the camper to eliminate any sliding or bouncing.

Don't Ruin Your Truck's Looks

Frame-mounted tie-downs are also a great pick for preserving your truck's good looks. The brackets install on the frame, tucked nearly flush with the underside of the vehicle. Remove the arms from the brackets when you're not hauling your camper, and the brackets will be barely visible.

Custom Fit, No-Drill Installation

Completely custom to your vehicle, the tie-downs attach to exisiting holes in your frame so that there's little to no drilling and no need for any modifications. Because they're custom, you'll want to use our in-house application guide to make sure you get the exact right model. The tie-downs you need might be different depending on what type of hitch or other accessories you have.

Securing Your Camper

TorkLift Tie Down Example

Once the tie-downs are installed, use a set of turnbuckles (sold separately) to secure the camper to the tie-downs. The shank on each arm has 2 pin holes so you can choose how far out they extend, that way the turnbuckles can reach the anchors on your camper without making contact with your truck. Tighten the turnbuckles to the correct level of tension (not too tight!).

where to put camper tie downs

Make sure the anchor points are offset from the tie-downs instead of lined up with them so that they will hold your camper from multiple angles. This is important for keeping your camper from shifting. Two holes in the attachment plate of the tie-downs let you find the best angle for you camper anchors.

Video Transcript for TorkLift Tie Downs Spec Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Torklift custom rear frame-mounted camper tie-downs. Now these are a custom fit part. They are designed to fit the 2013 and newer Dodge Ram and Ram 1500 trucks with the 5-1/2 foot bed or the 6-1/2 foot bed. And because it fits so many different vehicles, I do recommend just to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle and it'll show if these will work for your application. Now these tie-downs provide the attachment points at the rear of your truck for securing your bed mounted camper to your vehicle. And it'll help you feel dramatic improvement with the vehicle handling and stability.

And it's the safest way to haul a truck camper. Prevents any vehicle sway and camper movement in all directions. Now you can haul your truck camper confidently by attaching your tie-downs to the strongest part of your truck, which is the frame. And vehicle manufacturers do recommend that all full height sliding camper bodies should be directly attached to your vehicle's frame structure. The frame-mounted design ensures excellent handling by securing the camper to the truck's base instead of to its bed, which will better distribute the weight and keeps your setup from being too top heavy. And you also help avoid any bed or bumper damage that's common with other tie-down systems.

This system uses a fast, no drill installation securing your truck camper to your truck so it helps maintain the value of your truck and prevent rust and bed damage by avoiding drilling into your truck bed or bumper. As I mentioned, these are custom fit for your vehicle. The brackets right here will fit tight to the truck frame. There's no loss of any ground clearance, so it's perfect for off road truck camping and they're virtually undetectable when they're not in use. If you're not using them, you can just pull the pin out, remove the insert, and then these frames are all up underneath the truck. You don't even see them.

The hidden design of these brackets will return your truck to its original look and on the inserts right here, you notice they have two holes on the tie-downs. This allows you to connect your turnbuckles and not interfere with anything on your vehicle and you just slide it when you're ready to use them. Just slide it in. You have a hole here and a hole in the bracket, line that hole up. Once you get the hole lined up, take your pin, slide it all the way through, then just snap it in place and that'll hold the insert in there. Now these are driver's side and passenger side brackets and the way you can tell that is when you insert your insert into it.

The smaller, the shorter side of the tie-down should face the rear of the truck. So this would be on your driver's side, this would be on your passenger side when they're installed. They are steel construction. They have a nice black powder coat finish for durability and this part does include everything here on the table, the two rear tie-down inserts, the two brackets, all the necessary hardware to install it and a nice set of detailed instructions on how to install everything. And these parts are made in the USA. But that should do it for the review on the Torklift custom rear frame-mounted camper tie-down.
