Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this OptiMate 7 Gold Series 12 volt and 24 volt eight step AC to DC Smart Battery Charger and Maintainer. Now, this is a nice compact smart charger, which will draw power from an AC wall outlet to automatically charge, test, and maintain a 12 volt or 24 volt lead-acid battery. Does work with the 12 volt and 24 volt lead-acid batteries like the standard flooded, deep cycle, AGM, gel, and even the lead calcium batteries. This smart charger will allow the battery to be charged to 100% quicker and at the correct amperage. Does offer an eight step charging algorithm, which will automatically save, charge, test, and maintain without overcharging.
What's nice about this is it'll analyze your battery condition, provides a nice customized charge, offers a built-in battery desulfator to restore any lost battery capacity, and it'll test automatically and indicate if there's a battery problem. It even adjusts the voltage based on the temperature. It does use an Ampmatic charge, which will determine your battery size and adjusts the charging current to suit your battery. Now, there are two ways to connect this to your batteries. Basically, they first offer this battery clamp cable, this is a nice way to provide a quick, easy way to connect to your battery.
You can see it has the positive and negative clamps that you just clamp to the battery. The other end has the SAE connector that'll plug in right there when you're all ready to go. The other way they give you is an eyelet connector, this will let you make a more secure connection to your battery terminals. You can see it has the eyelets that you'll connect to your battery. Even includes this 15 amp fuse here to protect electronics from potential short circuits, and the same way, it has an SAE connector that'll plug into there, but if you noticed on this one, they even include a nice weatherproof seal and cap, helps keep out any dirt and water.
And both of these cables are 20 inches in length. Now, this does offers a simple operation, uses the LED lights that'll indicate your charging status, has an auto-memory feature, which remembers the last selection if the power's lost. This is all in a nice, durable, weatherproof case. You can see it includes the wall mounts, two holes here, two holes here. Now, the hardware to install it is not included, you would have to supply that.
Does offer a six foot AC supply lead here to plug in, six foot charge lead with the SAE connector, and the other nice thing, is on this, it does come with a nice manual that'll describe how this hooks up and operates, but also right here on the charger itself, it has a QR code, and if you scan that, it'll even give you the instructions also if you don't have them handy. Again, the application, this is for 12 volt batteries from 10 to 240 amp hours, 24 volt batteries from 5 to 120 amp hours, maximum charging amperage, 12 volts at 10 amps, 24 volts at five amps, input voltage, 100 to 240 volts AC, 50 to 60 hertz, and it has a low voltage detection rating of 0.5 volt, and the lowest operating temperature this will work in is a -40 degrees Fahrenheit. But that should do it for the review on this OptiMate 7 Gold Series 12 volt and 24 volt eight step AC to DC Smart Battery Charger and Maintainer..
I love that it charges 6V in addition to 12V batteries, both at three different voltage levels depending on the type of battery. It is definitely better-built than a modern Schumacher that you can buy in auto stores. It is made in China, but designed in Japan. It begins every charge cycle with a desulfating cycle. It supposedly also measures ambient temperature and factors that into the charge. It does not apply power to the two prongs when you plug it into the wall, which means you can accidentally let the two leads touch and nothing happens (this is a very good thing). The thing stays on 24/7/365 until it achieves success. I left it on a low, probably dead, 6V battery for 3 days and it was still pumping 10a into it in vain. OptiMate is the best; I use their chargers for wintering my motorcycles too. One negative: when you take it out of the box, the instructions seem very daunting. They clearly designed this to be sold worldwide. It's easy to operate once you use it a couple times.
