Thank you for the picture! It looks like the roof rack your friend was using on their 2006 Acura TL is the Thule square bar system. This consists of the (discontinued) 50" square crossbars THLB50, the (discontinued) Traverse Foot Pack 480, and the Fit Kit # THKIT1544.

It can be difficult to load a bike rack, including Thule Passage 3 Bike Carrier - Trunk Mount Item # TH911XT, to capacity. This is true with pretty much all hanging bike racks. What you can do though is move the cradles so that there is more space between them.
