Video Transcript for A Closer Look at the 42" Long Safety Chain with 5/16" Clevis Slip Hook

Speaker 1: Today we're taking a look at a 42-inch-long safety chain with a five-sixteenth inch clevis grab hook. This safety chain helps ensure safe towing. It provides a backup connection between your trailer and your towed vehicle, and you'd want to use this with an additional chain for a complete setup. The clevis hook on the end connects to the safety chain loop on your towed vehicle. It's got the spring-loaded safety latch mechanism to prevent accidental disconnecting, and then the end link would attach to your trailer tongue. This is a grade 70 chain. It's heat treated and it's made from a nice strong durable steel.

It features a yellow chromic finish to resist rust and corrosion. The weight capacity on this chain is 5,000 pounds. The overall length including the hook is 42 inches, and the chain length diameter is five-sixteenths of an inch. Now, the hook opening with that spring-loaded mechanism all the way open, I measured this gap right here and I got a measurement of thirteen-sixteenths of an inch; and the thickness of the hook at the thickest point, so right here from inside edge to outside edge, that thickness is about one inch. That's going to do it for today's look at the 42-inch-long safety chain with a five-sixteenth inch clevis grab hook.

  • How to Connect Trailer Safety Chain Hooks to Ford F-150 Factory Safety Chain Loops
The best solution for your Ford F-150 is to get two of the Durabilt Hammerlock Coupling Link for 1/2" Chain # DU96MR. This style of link is a little difficult to install but it's very secure and is designed specifically for the size of chain your trailer is equipped with. That 1" x 2" safety chain connection for your Ford OEM hitch has been a problem for Safety Chain Links like the part # TCTSCG70-842-06x1 you're looking at, but with the coupling link I referenced you'll be able to easily...

  • Replacement Safety Chains For a 21 Tandem Axle Boat Trailer
I recommend the 42" Long Safety Chain with 5/16" Clevis Grab Hook # TCTSCG70-842-06x1 for your 21' boat trailer. You will need two of these as they are sold individually. Each chain is rated for 5,000lbs and 42" long. The 3/8" clevis hooks are going to be used with much larger chains and are overkill for what you are needing.

  • Capacity of Titan Safety Chains And Can They Be Shortened
The 5,000 lb capacity on the # TCTSCG70-842-06x1 is per chain. You are correct, the limit would be 10,000 lbs with two of the chains working together like a typical safety chain setup which would be higher than your current 7,600 lb limit. It is perfectly acceptable to shorten the chain to 24" and it will not reduce the capacity of the chains.
