Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Note: Axle does not come fully assembled.

Pre-Greased Hubs

A trailer hub with the grease cap taken off shows greased bearings

The pre-greased hubs in this kit come with the bearings, races, and seals already installed, which makes for a faster install time and less mess to deal with. After you've put on the grease caps and lug nuts (included), you'll be ready to roll.

etrailer Axles

etrailer axles are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This hub-and-drum assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This assembly has also been tested by QAI Laboratories for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Arrived on time and in good condition. The ends of the axel should be better protected. The delivery person dropped mine vertically on the asphalt. Fortunately, the crown nut took the blunt of the impact and the grease fitting wasn’t damaged.

by:

Best thing I did was change axles to these. Went from 3500lb to these 7000lb with brakes on both. Tows and stops incredible.

by:

It's been a year since install and all is well! Thank you!

I ordered two axles to upgrade my trailer capacity to what the frame is rated for, 12,000lbs. The axles have great bearing seats and backing plate studs. The backing plates are fully assembled and ready to connect to the wires already installed into the axle tubes. The hub assembly went smooth and only one set of break shoes needed adjustment. A good buy along with the 5 fully assembled tires and wheels.

by:

I used these axles to upgrade my travel trailer suspension.they Seem to be a good quality item. Good paint job on the axles. Compared to axles that came with the travel trailer. Which helps living on the coast.

by:

Great videos that walked me through the installation being I’ve never done something like this before!
The fit was prefect for my trailer.
The only issue was the grease zerts were galled in shipping & I had to replace both zerts.
My recommendation would be for etrailer’s shipper to provide better protection for the axle zerts.

by:

Great axle so far has handled everything I have put on it so far and that's been a lot. Bought this because I managed to bent the axle by hauling my wife's equinox on it and hit a pot hole the size of grand canyon that bent the axle beyond safe operation. The other axle didn't get bent nearly as bad as this one but will also be replaced in the next year or so. But so far this replacement brake axle has held up pretty well over the last year.

by:

The brakes came apart in shipping and there should be directions on how to put it together

by:

Great product, as described, staff was vary helpful in making the purchase easy.

by:

Part arrived early, great communication from the team at Etrailer through the proccess.

by:

No problems. It's working great.did a few trips no incidents.

by:

etrailer is the best. I've been dealing with them for years. The orders are always right. The products are top-of-the-line.
Delivery was fast and free.. I have ordered online and I have called and spoken to the sales staff there who were very helpful and knowledgeable about their products. If you have trailers and you don't give a trailer look, you are missing out.

by:

Aside from not received complete order the first time, I will still recommend etrailer for all your needs

by:

Great value. I upgraded a 3500lb trailer and with the added brake it really helps. I use it to haul tools around so it handles the weight much better. Towing is a breeze now. Installation was easy as well. I will be buying more axles and parts in the future.

by:

The replacement axle is working very nicely. It is well engineered and quality’s is evident

by:

The axles are not yet installed. There was 1 bolt missing I called and they shipped it out immediately. to date everything was as they said. My delivery arrived much sooner than excepted. I would recommend using etrailer they have a very good process.

  • Parts Needed to Add Tandem 7K Axles to a Trailer From Scratch
I do have some options for you but we don't carry dually axles nor do they offer these in a 7,000 lb weight capacity. The dually axles are typically between 10,000 - 15,000 lbs. If you're however okay with just tandem 7,000 lb axles then we may have an option for you, starting with the axle we have a few different choices depending on your trailer width. The Trailer Axle with Electric Brakes part # e23SR for example is 94" long whereas the Trailer Axle with Electric Brakes part # e83SR...

  • Option For Replacing A Dexter 4,400 Lb Axle
The big things we are looking for on the label are the weight capacity, hub face (HF) length, and the spring center (SC) distance. Your axle is a 4,400 lb 85" HF and 68-1/2" CS Dexter axle. I will tell you up front that we do not carry a direct replacement for this axle. The most similar option that we offer is the Dexter 5,200 lb axle # 8327816. This will be slightly longer than your axle at 86-1/2" HF and 71-1/2" SC. So while it may be a suitable replacement weight capacity wise, you...

  • Can Different Weight Capacity Axles 7K and 9K Be Used On a Tandem Axle Trailer?
The biggest issue you may run into is going to be with replacing parts since you have different capacity axles. You are most likely going to have different brakes as well which may react differently and may notice one set of brakes wearing differently. Also you will need to ensure both the axles use the same weight capacity springs and you would be restricted to a maximum weight capacity of 14,000lbs since the axles share the load evenly.

  • Recommended Timbren Axle-Less System For A 7,000 Pound Trailer
Though we do not have an axle that is 68 inches at center to center we do have The Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System - Spindle w/ Brake Flange - Regular Tires - 7K # TASR7KS01.This system is rated for 7,000 pounds and has a bolt pattern of 8 on 6-1/2. Using these two independent unites can eliminate the need for a thru axle, and will also increase the ground clearance. It will also fit any trailer width. The system has a heavy-duty steel construction that has a black powder coat...

  • Info Needed to Determine if 7k Trailer Axle # #e23SR would Fit Trailer
You can email me back with the picture of your axle but if what you have now is 94 inches long from hub face to hub face and has a distance of 79 inches between spring seats this # e23SR would work great as a replacement. Basically to pick out a replacement axle for you trailer you need the capacity and the two dimensions mentioned and you'd be set.

  • Heavy-Duty Axle Options From etrailer.com
Thanks for reaching out! The heaviest axles we carry here at etrailer have a 7K weight rating (as of December 2022). Our standard axles have fixed hub-face and spring-center dimensions but we also carry the Timbren Axle-Less System # TASR7KS01 that installs directly to the trailer frame so it can fit virtually any spring-center dimension since it uses it's own suspension system. I've attached a few videos of the Timbren system as well as a link to our selection of 7K axles and a video...

  • Comparing The Total Weight Of A Fully Loaded 6,000 lb Axle Versus a Loaded 8,000 lb Axle
Hello Eric. We do offer a fully loaded 6,000 lb axle part # e73SR that weighs about 136 lbs including the axle, hubs and brakes. Now, we do not carry and 8,000 lb axles, but we do carry a 7,000 lb axle part # e23SR that has the same axle diameter as an 8K axle, and the fully loaded 7,000 lb axle weighs about 150 lbs. Since we do not have any 8K axles I can't give you an exact weight, but it stands to reason that a fully loaded 8K axle of the same length would be about 10-15 lbs more than...

  • How to Choose the Correct Axle Capacity for Trailer
The axle capacity needs to be enough to handle the weight of the trailer plus whatever it is carrying. In other words, the axles need to meet or exceed the GVWR or gross vehicle weight rating. Assuming this is some kind of dump trailer with tandem axles I would say it weighs 2,000 lbs or more on its own. Add in the 9k lbs it can carry and you would be looking at 6k axles at a minimum, possibly 7k if the trailer is heavier. You will need to know the exact GVWR to select the right axle. For...

  • How to Find Replacement Hub for Homemade Tilt Trailer
Hi Gary; measuring the diameter of the hub won't determine what fits your spindle/axle. You will have to identify your bearings to find the right replacement. They may be stamped into the bearings so start by checking there. If you can't find the part number, measure the inside diameter of the bearings or the spindle where the bearings ride using a digital caliper # PTW80157. See the diagram below. If you can provide me with this information I can see if a replacement is available.
