Hey everyone, it's Evangeline right here at etrailer. Today we have our Lear soft roll-up tonneau cover. We're gonna be taking a look at how it fits and it'll also show you how to get it all installed on your 2024 Ram 1500. The perks of a soft roll-up tonneau cover is that you're able to protect the cargo inside your truck bed. But since it rolls up, it doesn't take up much space when it's in the compact position. A soft cover is usually also a more affordable tonneau cover.
Lear has a bunch of hard tonneau covers that are great. This being their soft roll-up version is pretty okay. It does offer really good coverage, but it also takes a little bit more effort to get installed. The reason it does take a little bit more to install, though, is because this is an inside the bed rail installed cover, meaning this gives you full access to the stake pockets of your truck bed. So if you need to install anything or put anything on the sides of your truck bed rails, this is gonna give you that access.
Like most soft tonneau covers, this is going to be a black vinyl that is UV ray and fade resistant. This has more of a textured look to it, which a lot of people like because it adds to a more sporty and not as glossy look. If you want to get access into your truck bed though, and you wanna roll up the tonneau cover, you do have to lower your tailgate first. (tailgate clicking) So your own truck is going to work as the lock for your tonneau cover, and then you can pop open (cover clicking) the tonneau cover from there. This is nice because then you don't have to reach on both sides to get that up and open, and now you just roll the tonneau cover all the way up.
Now there is no halfway or quarter-way position to store this, you do have to choose between fully unrolled or fully compact. (cover rustling) To keep it into the fully compact position you do have two buckles that you can use to keep it rolled up. With it rolled up like this this only sits five and a half inches above your truck bed rails. This is giving you pretty much full visibility through your rear window and rear mirror. In fact, the cab seats here in our Ram 1500 sit above where your tonneau cover sits in your truck bed.
This style also gives you most of your truck bed space if you wanna fully load up your truck bed with cargo. But because the rails fit inside the bed, they are gonna take up two inches on each side if you wanna max out your width and then up towards the front, they are going to take four inches by your cab. You also have the option of removing two bolts up by the cab if you wanna lift out the vinyl part of the tonneau cover and leave the rails installed. If you also wanna remove the rails just because you need those two inches on each side, then it's just three clamps on each side of the truck bed and the whole thing can be removed. Technically pretty easy to do. The tricky part is making sure all your measurements or all your things are super flush against your Ram 1500. This truck bed does not give you lots of room for tolerance. You really have to make sure everything is flush. So you want a tonneau cover that gives you access to your stake pockets, installs below the rails, (cover snapping) and also gives you a lot more adjustability for tension, (cover snapping) that's when you might be interested in the Lear soft roll-up tonneau cover. So in order to properly install this to get that nice tension, let's go take a look at that install process. So first, starting the install, I have some tips and tricks just to make things a tad bit faster. So what we're gonna do first is we're gonna set up the rails with the clamps. You may have to loosen the clamps first with your included Allen key and once they're loose, you're going to slide them in through the rails. There's really only one entrance point to slide them through, which is going to be at the end towards the tailgate, so go ahead and slide those three. I also like to thread in the lower screws ahead of time. Don't thread 'em too far, just enough where they're in the clamp. Try to space them out evenly for the front, the back, and the middle. With the clamps open, you can then clip them into your top bed rails (rail rattling) and then secure them in place. That bottom screw is mainly just there to keep contact with that top clamp. Once those screws are in there, you can then tighten down the clamp screws in the center. You're gonna want these pretty tight. You're also gonna wanna lift up on the rail to make sure it's flush as you tighten these down. Double check that torque setting in the instructions. Now, once your clamp screws are secure, you technically can remove your lower screws. I like to keep them in just in case I need to make any changes during the install. Once all the clamps are secured, your rails are secured, now it's time to secure our tonneau cover. So lift up onto the truck bed and get your long bolts. These bolts slide in to the track and then come up over here so they're held in place. Do this on both sides. Those bolts are gonna drop into the rails. Secure with a flat washer, a split washer, and then you have your wing nut. Once your wing nut is tight on both sides, you're then gonna put the barrel net underneath to prevent it from backing off. (screw whirring) You can also use that five millimeter Allen key to tighten down that barrel net. It's time to see how we did. We're gonna unbuckle our tonneau cover, one on both sides, and then unroll it. Some things to look out for is to see how the bows fit into the rails. It's a pretty tight fit here. If it is difficult, let's say the bow is sitting on top of the rail, you will need to loosen the rail and readjust it so it sits further away from the center of the truck bed. Now ours fits just right, so we're gonna continue unrolling. All the way until we get to the latch. Notice how this fits into the latch. (cover clicking) It's simply a matter of pushing down on the tonneau cover (cover clicking) and it pulls that tension in. Notice that it is a little bit loose on the passenger side. That can be adjusted over in the corner. We're just going to loosen those corner bolts, push the tonneau cover up, and then tighten those bolts back down. If the tonneau cover offers adjustment like this one does, I'm pretty particular about adjusting every single piece of tension (cover clicking) until everything lays flat (hands thumping) and rigid. This looks a lot better. I'm happy with this. All I need to do now is just pat down the edges and we're gonna check for our tailgate clearance. This flap over here, while I'm used to having it above the tailgate, actually sits on the inside. So (tailgate slamming) closing the tailgate that sits underneath, our tonneau cover sits on top of our tailgate, and that's a good fit. Now, the installation process wasn't the easiest because those in bed rails definitely took a lot more time to make sure they we inchesre super flush against the truck bed rails and making sure everything was flush took a lot of back and forth, especially, to get our tension just perfect. But those adjustments really should only need to be done once. After that, you're free to enjoy your tonneau cover. This right here was a look at the fit and installation of the Lear soft roll-up tonneau cover on the 2024 Ram 1500.
Received in good condition and installed easily.
Very please, with the fast delivery and the tracking was updated frequently l. The items I bought fit perfectly and are what I was looking at
So far so good
Perfect fit. Performed as expected.
I would have given better ratings if the written instructions were better. The online video from your site saved the day. Also, lock washers and washers were loose in the box. Not good packaging from the manufacturer.
I put this on my Chevy 2500 about a year ago and it has performed great. It is pretty water-tight except during torrential wind / rain storms and only leaks a little. It has survived a hellacious hail storm this last spring without any damage. The truck had $11K damage.
Love the cover, the look and the overall installation. I did find the self adhesive on the weather-strip for the front to be weak. I have a dura-liner bed liner. I cleaned the area and even wiped with alcohol, but still feel the adhesive should have held tighter.
Simply, Perfect! Delivery was fast. Installation was approx 30 minutes and that included unboxing. Installation video on etrailer didn’t miss a step making this a very smooth install. The Leer Soft Tonneau Cover fits like a glove and completes the look of my 2019 F150 SuperCrew. What sold me on this cover was the 6 interior clamps (Black & low profile) and the releasing mechanisms (Pinch Style) located on both left and right side of this cover making for an overall quality look and performance.
Overall - this is a good tonneau cover. The release mechanism being on both sides is great, it closes very well - not so tight like some others I have had over the years. The only complaint is the weatherstrip for the front didn't seal to my sprayed in bedliner and I had to come up with a different solution.
So far it is working like a charm. It was easy to install and looks and works great.
First off I don't like writing bad reviews, that said the product itself wasn't that bad but the instructions were total garbage. I learned more in 5 minutes watching etrailer's video. I am pretty handy and I struggled with the whole process or lack thereof.
Still fits great....easy to use....great quality
Thank you...nice to see you care enough to check on me and my thoughts on the product.
As always the service from etrailer was outstanding.
I chose the leer cover for several reasons. The 3 support bars under the cover and the pinch releases in both sides.
The install directions were not all that helpful. I figured it out and it took me about 45 minutes to install.
Very nice , works well
