Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These pewag ladder-patterned chains are great winter weather chains for your vehicle. Not only do the grooved square links dig into deep snow and ice better than rounded or standard square links, but the reversible design of these chains also allows them to wear under standard use much longer than other chains. And if you're partial to American-made products, you'll be happy to know that these are made in Colorado.

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. These chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing these chains is simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.

Drape chains over tire.

2. Drape the chains over your tires, making sure that the prongs attaching the cross chains to the side chains face away from your sidewalls. Drive forward about half a tire rotation.

Connect the chain behind the tire

3. On the back of the tire, pull the chain tight and hook the ends together. Repeat this on the front of the tire.

Install rubber adjusters

If needed, rubber adjusters (sold separately) can be used to get a tight fit. Make sure the hooks on the adjusters face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Have had these for less than a year and they're already cracked and rough-looking. Hoping this is just aesthetic but I'm afraid they're going to fail soon!

2018 Chevrolet Silverado

Just got chains, came when said they would. Put them on they fit fine and got good traction. First set of chains I have ordered for a pickup. They a little lighter weight than I expected. But other chains i have used have been on farm equipment and were made from heaver material. I wouldn't purchase anything lighter weight or cheaper than these unless your using them solely for on road use. On a 2018 Silverado 1500 18" wheels pickup the chains fit well, but you definitely need the chain tightening bunge or the chains do hit the fenders on the rear. Not the chains fault, just GM should have left more space between the rear wheels and the fenders.

Dont use often 5 times but work ok

Just received them and test fitted them on my Falken Wildpeak AT3W 275/65R18 backtires. It was a tight fit, but they made it, plus the tires are brand new. Havent used them yet, but they seem well made.

After a mishap with USPS losing half my chain set, etrailer customer service quickly sent out a replacement with UPS, that standard in quality shipping. The chains themselves seem nice, albeit a bit difficult to install but I’ve never mounted dually chains before and perhaps it’s my fault. My duals seem awfully close together and the middle chain section comes up short. The correct size was purchased so I don’t know what’s going on. Added a few links and it’s secured. -Star for the shipping debacle that wasn’t really etrailers fault. That’s really on USPS.

by:

These arrived, and I put them on in the garage to test fit, and they appear to be perfect. I had to buy two sets, to cover front and rear tires. My tires are 33x12.50x15, and at some point I plan to move up to 35x12.50x15 and understand these will cover those tires too.
So I expect to be covered in extreme ice conditions.
Very easy to install at home in the garage. I did also purchase the orange chain tensioner's, and they work nicely too. But I really may not need them, as I was able to get these very snug by using 3rd and 4th tightening links. I watched the video that explains how to stack the loose links so they don't flop around too much.
etrailer was a pleasure to work with, products arrived quickly.

by:

Chains work great on snow and ice in harsh Montana winters. Easy to install, but I wish they came with a retention system for the excess links at the connection points. I just use a small bungee to secure them and prevent them from hitting brake lines and wheel liners. Used with heavy duty rubber spider tensioner.

We had just been through a bad ice storm and couldn't get out of our acreage. A second storm was coming, so I called Jesse M to select and purchase a set of chains for my truck. Jesse M was able to ship them the same day, and they arrived in the nick-of-time. If I hadn't had these chains, my family would have been stranded.

Thanks Jesse M!!

by:

Fit was great. Extra chain was easy to secure.

by:

I had to use both sets of chains to leave from my elk hunting camp in CO. Lots of snow and mud. Chains were fairly easy easy to put on and take off and worked flawlessly. The square links really bit into the ice, no slippage involved. I work in remote areas with heavy equipment and bad roads and everyone uses Pewag chains and loves them. Not cheap, but worth every penny.

by:

I just received the chains yesterday, a fairly quick turn around given the weight and they were out of stock. They appear to be good quality, I've yet to use them. A note, the shipping cardboard box was torn wide open upon arrival on 3 of the 4 corners, I would recommend a better quality box for shipping or contents are going to go missing. Nothing appeared to be damaged inclusive of the other items I ordered. I can imagine that most arrive this way due to the sheer weight of the chains....but still. If I needed more chains and or other items, I "would" order from etrailer.com again.

by:

delivery was very fast. Thanks

by:

Tire chains arrived in a timely manner, and everything worked great!

by:

I am pleased with these tire chains. There are easy to hook up and tighten down well. I have yet to break a link. They are not any more noisy than any other chain. When breaking they do not tend to slide. When using the chain adjusters, there is no banging of excess chain on the vehicle. shipping was fast and well packed. Would purchase again. Highly recommend the chain adjusters.

by:

I got these chains for my 3500 Ram with 10 ply E rated Hankook I-Pike winter tires size 245-75-17. I had first ordered PWE3210S that the manufacturer said would fit, but the chains were a few inches too short. Vanessa at E-trailer worked with me and she was in contact with Pewag numerous times to ensure a proper fit on the second set of chains and they fit perfectly. I really cant believe how good of customer service these folks at E-trailer provide, outstanding!!

by:

by:

Estimated ship time from eTrailer was inaccurate since the product turned out not to be in stock; had to wait an additional week before delivery.

However the chains did fit my 2015 RAM 2500 Power Wagon with stock tires (Duratrac 285/70-17) and wheels. The rear left parking brake cable is VERY close (~1/2 inch) from the chain, so I had to use a zip tie to keep the extra links from slapping against the cable. There was plenty of clearance up front and on the rear right. Glacier rubber adjusters (PW99) are necessary to remove chain slack.

by:

Worth their weight in gold! Wouldn't buy any other tire chain after using these. Square links makes the difference and has gotten my 2001 F250 Superduty out of some tricky situations up on fire roads in the winter time with a load of snowmobiles on my flatbed. I honestly should buy another pair to have all 4 tires covered but they take up some space. Still, these chains are the cats meow!

by:

I hadn't planned on leaving a review based on my experience but received the email reminder to rate these chains. Others have had a good experience so I'm hopeful I may have just had bad luck. These were on my plow truck which is only used on my long dirt driveway. After 4 plows I had a link break at the joint of the tread and outside chain. I repaired it and shortly after another one broke on the same tire and one broke on the other tire. I've been running chains for years so I'm fairly certain this wasn't an installation problem.

The chains appear to be high quality and I like the square links.

I give it an average rating because I hope my experience is out of the norm.

by:

If you are looking for the strongest chains these are the ones for you. Only used mine a handful of times so far on the lake and no issue at all getting traction and absolutely no sign of wear!!! Called last year to verify the size of fitment for my truck. 285-65-r18. Very friendly and helpful staff but the chains were too big when received and I was able to take one cross section out and cut the rest off for perfect fitment. Otherwise 5 star quality product.

by:

First set of chains broke in a month. Replaced under warranty. Second set of chains broke in a couple months. Didn't bother to replace them because I feel bad about doing it twice

by:

Very sturdy construction, build quality is excellent. better than the product was the service provided by etrailer, i was in contact with Carol C. who kept me informed of the status of my order and also followed up after delivery of the chains

by:

I have tested these in my driveway they fit excellently they lock solidly onto the tire and each other with the additional tensioner there's no way they could come off I have not used these on the snow yet as I bought them for a trip across the country during February I have not encountered the chance to use them and I hope I don't lol they are real quality product. I cannot speak to the durability as I have not been able to use them yet

  • Recommended Tire Chains for 1999 Ford F250 Super Duty
If you are purchasing the chains for emergency use only, and they will sit in your tool box more often than not, an inexpensive set of chains like the Glacier Chains # PWH2228SC would be a good choice. The chains are constructed of low-carbon steel and offer a 90 day warranty. If you consistently find yourself in situations where chains are needed, you would want something more durable like the Pewag # PWE2228S. These chains are constructed of corrosion-resistant nickel manganese alloy...

Konig doesn't offer chains that would fit the 255/80-17 tire size, but we do have other choices. Ram does state in the owner's manual that it's acceptable to use chains on both the front and rear wheels of the 3500 dually models, but they go on to say that you should use the same type/style chains on the front and rear axle to prevent handling problems. I'd recommend the Pewag # PWE4228SC for the duals on the rear axle, and if you wish to use chains on the front axle, use # PWE2228S....

For a great set of tire chains that fit your 2020 Ford Explorer with standard 255/55-20 tires, I recommend the pewag All Square Snow Tire Chains - Square Link - Reversible - 1 Pair # PWE2228S. Not only do these chains have a thickness of only 5.6mm, they also are rated for on-road and off-road use.
