Video Transcript for Fastway Zip Coiled Trailer Breakaway Cable Review

What's up, everybody It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna be checking out this Fastway breakaway cable. So this is gonna be a replacement part for the one that came with your breakaway switch. So if something happened, you lost it or it broke, you can easily replace it. Let's check it out. It's gonna plug in the exact same way here on our breakaway switch.

It's also that coil design, so that's better than the straight steel cable design 'cause those usually have extra to them that you have to find a place for, or they can sag down as they get it hooked up. With this coil design, when you've got it hooked up to the hitch, you can see it's gonna stay in a straight line and be outta the way of everything else. To give you a better example, I wanna compare you with straight steel cable one, and see it had to be zip tied to take up some of that extra cable, and that's just kind of annoying that you have to do that. That's why this one's far better with a coil design because you're not gonna have that problem or have to do this. Plus, you have this sturdy, heavy-duty carabiner at the end rather than just a steel cable loop.

This is a universal fit for breakaway switches as long as it's that style of end on there. And it's also gonna come in six foot and four foot options. So if you need to match that up with your vehicle set up and your trailer, you can. Well, I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out and I hope this helps.

Return purchase, always get these for any of the trailers I tow, these should already be on any trailer that’s sold and has electric brakes. Beats a bare cable that gets frayed and rips up you hands, easy to keep out of the way when not in use.

by:

After one year the Fastway coiled break away cable looks like it just came out of the box! Coiled cable still maintains its tight coil. The red cable coating has not faded. The carabiner clip has no corrosion and works perfectly.

by:

I replaced the original vinyl covered stainless steel break away cable with this coiled break away cable. The coiled break away cable doesn’t get tangled up in the safety chains or drag on the ground, so it suits my needs better.

by:

I got tired of having the thin wire cable that came on the trailer always hanging down and it had frayed slightly so quite often I got poked in the finger with the frayed wire. This product stops that problem. No more slack cable hanging down and no more poked fingers. When not using the trailer, the coiled cable stays neatly out of the way.

by:

Just received my coil breakaway cable, I bought a new trailer in less than 4 months my cable snapped . The breakaway cable is perfect because it does not drag and will not get caught under trailer jack going up driveways.
The only concern I have is the thickness of the breakaway cable seams awful thin, but I'm sure it has been thoroughly tested.

by:

Well made product. The coiled cable works well staying up out of the way of the safety chains and the electrical cable. I would feel better if it were more substantial, but all it has to do is pull out the plunger from the break-away switch, so it should work just fine. I hope I never put that to the test.

by:

Really nice & simple shortcut to trailer hitching. Cleans up the overall appearance of the attachments - chains, electrical umbilical, and breakaway connection, and makes it faster.

We'll just have to see as far as durability goes. So far so good a year later.

by:

These coiled breakaway cables are the greatest thing ever! I was forever replacing breakaway cables from getting the slack pinched in between the hitch and the trailer. I haven't had to replace one since changing over. I now have about 90% of the fleet trailers changed over.

by:

simple, functional and to the point

by:

We had a plastic coated aircraft cable that was OEM on our amusement trailer. Unfortunately, the cable was far too long, drug the roadway and eventually broke.

As a prior customer of etrailer.com, I looked here first for just such a piece of safety equipment. It was exactly what we needed, stays up and out of the way when not attached to our tow vehicle. It was easier than trying to build a replacement cable! the cable is built solidly, the split ring is beefier than you'd think by looking at just the photos and the carabiner clip locks securely onto our tow vehicle.

Shipping, as usual with etrailer.com, was lightning fast.

My overall experience, with this and other purchases, has always been excellent. I even got to visit the warehouse for a pick-up on a trip in Feb, 2014! The folks are as nice in person as they are over the phone, through email or even online chat help.

Excellent selection of products, site easy to navigate, prices are reasonable, super quick shipping and stellar customer service! What more could I ask for!

Great! Very happy with product

If your' looking to buy something and need it quickly, etrailer is the place to get it. *** This is a great little device. I installed the Fastway Zip Coiled Breakaway Cable on a previous camper trailer and now, bought it for my present camper trailer. It's a simple installation and is out of the way(not dangling around) when not in use. Thanks etrailer!!

by:

On the way home from a recent camping trip, my trailer's original equipment safety brake cable frayed completely in two. This looks like the perfect solution. I haven't had it on the road yet, but it was easy to install.

After a year on the road, this cable is working just fine. I was a little concerned at first that it doesn’t have much slack at all, but that doesn’t seem to be a problem.

by:

Excellent replacement for the factory breakaway cable. No more dangling cables and broken casing with sharp wires, the coiled cable is easy to connect and stays up out of the way.

1 year on and still looks like the day it was installed. Should have done this years ago.

by:

fits great on 14 ft. bumper pull trailer, no dragging of chord. very happy so far

by:

Easy to put on and a good little upgrade for the crappy cable that came with my trailer.

by:

Haven’t had a need to see if it works thankfully. It’s seems well made and easily fit on my car and the breakaway switch on the trailer

Fast and easy checkout and quick shippi ng.

by:

I purchased this breakaway cable for my car trailer. It is much nicer than
the original one. Great service.

by:

Easy to install per the directions. Keeps cable from getting near the ground or worse dragging the ground. Fast shipping.

by:

When our long, tangled original cable deployed while making a sharp turn in a parking lot we decided to try the fastway cable. What an improvement! We have had no issues with it. It works when you need it and springs back out of the way when your trailer is disconnected. Perfect!

by:

Excellent service. Excellent product and fit. Very fast shipping.

by:

Easy to install and a much better design than the standard breakaway cable.

by:

Still using this on my fifthweel. quick hook up and still retaining is coiled elasticity. When not connected it sits right on the flange of the pinbox.

  • Will Fastway Zip Coiled Trailer Breakaway Cable FA80-01-2140 Work With ESCO Breakaway?
Hello Gary, thanks for reaching out. Yes, the Fastway Zip Coiled Trailer Breakaway Cable # FA80-01-2140 can work with really any brand of breakaway switch, so it'll work just fine with your ESCo breakaway. As long as the 4' length is right for your setup you'll be good to go. What kind of car do you usually haul?

  • Is Fastway Zip Coiled Trailer Breakaway Cable DOT Approved
Hi Norman, I checked with Fastway and yes it is; they say the Fastway Zip Coiled Trailer Breakaway Cable - 4' Long # FA80-01-2140 meets or exceeds all DOT requirements.

  • Should the Breakaway Cable be Shorter or Longer Than the Safety Chains
I would recommend that the breakaway cable be cut shorter than the safety chains/cables that way if the trailer were to come uncoupled from the hitch ball it would come to a stop without slamming into the back of the tow vehicle. For a breakaway switch cable I really like the Fastway Zip Coiled Trailer Breakaway Cable part # FA80-01-2140 for 4' long or part # FA80-01-2160 for 6' long as the coiled design keeps it free from dragging or fraying. I have also attached a list of our safety...

  • Should 4' Cable for Breakaway Kit be Cut Short to Match Length of Safety Chains
The 4' of cable that comes with the Fastway Zip Coiled Trailer Breakaway Cable # FA80-01-2140 is actually standard for breakaway cables. If your trailer comes uncoupled then the chains should catch the coupler (which is why you criss-cross the chains). The only time you want your trailer brakes to lock up like that is if the trailer were to completely disconnect from your vehicle, safety chains and all. The 4' of cable is enough to let you tow normally without the pin being pulled and...

  • How Long Should Break Away Cables Be
The RVIA (Recreational Vehicle Industry Association) recommends that the trailer break away cable be slightly longer than the safety chains. The logic behind that is that the brakes will apply should the safety chains fail.

  • What Size/Style Breakaway Cable Do I Need To Replace My Current Cable
I'm assuming that you're saying you have a 4' coiled breakaway cable kind of like the Fastway # FA80-01-2140. When it comes to replacing the cable it really doesn't matter what the style/length is as long as the length is less than your safety chains. In the event of a breakaway the safety chains will keep the trailer attached to the tow vehicle and will pull tight, causing the breakaway cable pin to be pulled out of the switch. If the cable is too long it won't pull the pin and activate...

  • Recommended Fastway Coiled Cable Breakaway Cable for 5th Wheel Trailer
You can use either a 4 foot cable like # FA80-01-2140 or a 6 foot cable like # FA80-01-2160. Either will work well on a 5th wheel trailer. Where you mount the breakaway on the trailer will dictate the best location for you to allow trailer turning and also a quick engagement if your trailer were to breakaway from your tow vehicle. If you don't have the entire assembly, you can use # FA80-00-2040 for the 4 foot cable or # FA80-00-2060 for the 6 foot cable. I've attached an article...

  • How to Remove Trailer Break Away System Cable From Vehicle When Unhitching Trailer
You won't want to remove the break away pin from the switch, as this would activate the trailer brakes and run down the break away system's battery. You'll want to remove the cable from the safety chain loop on the vehicle. The easiest way to do that would be to remove and discard the existing break away cable like # 34-285 and install the # FA80-01-2140 Fastway Zip Coiled Trailer Breakaway Cable. • How Much Force Is Required To Remove The Pin On a Trailer Breakaway Switch?
The Trailer Breakaway Switch # 420000 should be somewhat difficult to pull out. If you give the cable a quick tug it should allow the pin to more easily be removed for testing. You will then be able to attach your Coiled Breakaway Cable # FA80-01-2140.
