How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

  • Why Would The Lippert Power Stance Work Off The Auxiliary Cord And Not The Coach Battery?
It sounds like you have one of two possible issues with the Lippert Power Stance Electric Trailer Jack # LC89VR. First there is a fuse on the power wire that is not present on the Auxiliary Power Cord # LC79VR. Be sure to check the fuse. The second issue to check is your ground connection. Since your trailer frame is painted as well as the jack the mounting brackets do not always make the best contact. The jack uses the frame as the ground circuit so you may need to grind off some of...

  • Replacement Extend And Retract Switch For A Lippert Powered Tongue Jack 1817941
The Lippert Power Tongue Jack 1817941 has been replaced with the Lippert Electric Trailer Jack with Footplate # LC285318, which has the Replacement Extend/Retract Switch for Lippert Electric Trailer Jack # LC49MD. This is the same switch they use for most of their jacks so it should be a fairly simple swap out. The top cover # LC285160 of the jack is held in place by four screws (two up front and two in the back) that face upwards from the base cover. Once these four screws are out you...

  • Are Replacement Parts Available For A Lippert Electric A-Frame Jack
Unless you have the Lippert Electric Trailer Jack with Footplate # LC285318 you will not be able to get any replacement parts for a Lippert jack. This is the only model with replacement switches available and they can only be purchased with the top cover # LC285160. Because Lippert has pretty much stopped offering any replacement parts for their jacks I always recommend getting away from their jacks and purchasing one like the Electric Jack w/ Footplate # EJ-3520-BBX since we carry all...

  • Dimensions of Lippert Power Stance Electric Trailer Jack LC89VR
I contacted the manufacturer for you and was able to get the dimensions of the Lippert jack: - Lippert Power Stance Electric Trailer Jack with 7-Way Plug # LC89VR. Overall it measures approximately 32-1/4 inches, with a 5-1/2 inch diameter footplate, and is 21-1/2 inches from the top of the bracket to the top of the jack.

  • Does The Lippert Power Stance Electric Trailer Jack Have A Drop Leg For Quick Operation?
The Lippert Power Stance Electric Trailer Jack # LC89VR does not have a drop leg. The pin you see by the footplate is only for the footplate to remove and install it. The retraction and extension of the leg is electronically controlled. If you're looking for the fastest jack, I HIGHLY suggest getting the Trailer Valet JXC # TV54FR. I know it's not an electric jack, BUT you can use an electric drill to control the extension and retraction of the leg. I've found that electric jacks are not...

  • Does Lippert Power Stance Electric Camper Jack Come with 7-Way Plug?
The Lippert Power Stance Electric Trailer Jack w/ 7-Way Plug - A-Frame - 18" Lift - 3,500 lbs # LC89VR comes with the auxiliary power wire for trailer 7-way power connection. However, the Lippert Power Stance Electric Trailer Jack with Footplate - A-Frame - 18" Lift - 3,500 lbs # LC69VR comes with the power wire for the trailer battery connection only. The Auxiliary Power Cord for Lippert Power Stance Electric Trailer Jack # LC79VR is sold separately and is 6 feet long.

The Lippert Power Stance Electric Trailer Jack w/ 7-Way Plug - A-Frame - 18" Lift - 3,500 lbs # LC89VR is 45 lbs at shipping. The packaging will likely be a couple lbs so you will want to consider that. The Power Stance without the plug # LC69VR has a shipping weight of 40 lbs.

  • Troubleshooting Lippert Power Stance Electric Trailer Jack LC89VR No Longer Working
I would be happy to help! Now the cause for the power not getting to your Lippert Power Stance Electric Trailer Jack # LC89VR will be dependent on if you are using the 7-way adapter to draw power from your vehicles 7-way connector, or if you hard wired the jack to the battery on your trailer. Starting with the 7-way connector option I recommend using a circuit tester like # 40376 to verify that the 12v power pin of your 7-way connector is working correctly. This is the 1 o'clock pin as...

  • How to Power Electric Trailer Jack When Vehicle With 7-Way Isnt Available
To run the jack using 110V shore power, you'll need a bench-top type 12-volt power supply which you can easily find online. You'd also need a 7-way socket and pigtail like # 20024. If you choose a power supply with screw terminals on the front of it, the black pigtail wire would connect to the positive terminal and the white pigtail wire to the negative terminal on the power supply. You'll want to use a power supply capable of putting out at least 30A. To run the jack off the trailer...

  • Does The Lippert Power Stance Electric Jack Have A Cutoff Switch To Prevent Battery Drain
The Lippert Power Stance Electric Trailer Jack w/ 7-Way Plug # LC89VR doesn't have a cutoff switch to fully prevent battery drain, but shouldn't pull enough to kill the battery that quickly. If you're storing the trailer and worried about the battery being dead when you go to pick it up then you can install a disconnect switch like the Seaflo # SE29VR. This is super easy to mount on the tongue of the trailer and prevent battery drain while you're away. I've attached a short video below...

  • Using Vehicle Battery To Power Trailer Tongue Jack.
Great question. You technically could connect the Bulldog Powered-Drive Trailer Jack - Drop Leg - A-Frame - 21-3/4" Lift - 3,500 lbs - White # BD500188 to your vehicle lights, but we do not have the connector you would need to just plug into your tail light plug. I have a solution for this though. You can get the Lippert Power Stance Electric Trailer Jack w/ 7-Way Plug - A-Frame - 18" Lift - 3,500 lbs # LC89VR. Though the head on the Lippert Power Stance Electric Trailer Jack w/ 7-Way Plug - A-Frame - 18" Lift - 3,500 lbs # LC89VR is fixed and cannot be rotated, there is another way to get the clearance needed. The standard 3 bolt pattern this installs in is an equilateral triangle, so you technically can turn the jack and mount it not facing forward. It will work exactly the same, but the LED lights will no longer face the coupler.

  • Do You Need To Grease The Lippert Power Stance Tongue Jack?
The Lippert Power Stance Electric Trailer Jack w/ 7-Way Plug # LC89VR does not require to be greased by the operator. I would not recommend putting grease on the jack as the grease will capture dirt that will cause the jack to run slower and have issues.
