Video Transcript for A Closer Look at the Westin EXP Truck Topper

Hi, Matt at etrailer. If you're looking for a truck topper that's gonna give you versatility and is also gonna give you extra security and is also gonna give you more of that rugged OEM finish to the back of your truck, then the Westin EXP truck cap is gonna be a great option for you. So let's check it out. So what I really like about this is it's giving us more of an OEM finish. It's almost seamless from the back of our truck and up. And it's really gonna be for anyone who does like to take those longer adventures where not only you need your bed, but you're gonna want something on top of your roof.

Anything like longer items like we have today where we have this Yakima SkinnyWarrior. on the other side we've got some skis, things that won't typically work nicely in the bed of your truck. It's also great for kayaks or even a rooftop tent, which I think in my opinion would be the top pick for putting up here 'cause that's gonna allow you to open up the little side doors here and this is where you can really store your gear. Anything that's a little bit more weather sensitive because this gonna be very sealed up nicely. And on top of that, we're gonna have three separate doors to open up so we can open up this from multiple points.

If something's not in a good spot for you to reach, you can grab it from over here. And what's also great about this is earlier is that this is gonna be very secure. Each one of these doors are gonna have locks to 'em. So even if you're using this for work and you're worried about someone taking your very nice or expensive tools, this is gonna make sure no one can get in here. So you probably notice that we have this on a GMC Sierra, but these will fit a variety of other vehicles.

So what I suggest is just plugging in your vehicle's information into our fit guide, then make sure you find the right one that gonna fit your truck. But before we go any further about some of the details about this, I just wanna give my opinion on it. And for me, this is probably gonna be one of my top choices for a topper.

If you're someone who is looking for that security, that rugged look to the back of the vehicle and that versatility because like I said earlier, using it feels really smooth, it has locks on it. We can store your gear inside of here. And the fact that we do have an option to put a roof rack up here so we can load up our larger items is definitely a game changer. Now if you're looking for just something for that basic weather protection, something more lightweight, then I'd actually recommended one of our soft toppers that we have on our website. There's plenty of options and they do a great job. They're just not gonna have the security that this does or the versatility. But what we're gonna be focusing on this topper is gonna be one house gonna be like that actually use and really work with it and then we'll go into the construction, then I'll talk a little bit about the specs. So let's open it up real quick. So using this, I just gotta turn this knob a little bit. I have this unlocked at the moment and that's gonna open up. Sometimes I've noticed this'll have just a little bit of resistance at the base of it, but once I get to this point, it's pretty much doing the rest of the work for me. That's gonna be 'cause we have gas struts on either side, pushing in the place and we're gonna have more of this clean look to the interior of it too. So this is gonna give me access, so when I do need to reach over here, this isn't sitting up too high, I can grab whatever I need. If I have any tools, I'm gonna pull that out real quick. Now if there's anything longer, you might have to try to maneuver it some, but for the most part it's making this a lot easier to use. And we're gonna have this back door here and this is actually gonna have a window to it. So when you are backing up, you can see out of it and keep an eye on any of your gear that's back there. And up here at the top we're also gonna have this third brake light. I'm actually show you with how that looks. I'll place that break now, give you an idea and it should be a pretty clear picture back there. It should look pretty nice and that's gonna be nice because when you're driving down the road, that's just gonna give you some extra like security. So you make sure someone's gonna see this behind you so they don't make contact with you. And again, this is gonna work just like the other sides where I'll just kind of turn on that, now it'll open up. We're still gonna have those two struts, but when I do open this up, you can actually see to the other side and we're gonna have an additional window so you can see all the way through. And we've had a pretty good look at the bottom, so let's take it up now. So like I said, you can actually mount different accessories up here and that's gonna be because we have this track system. Now you can actually find a roof rack on our website. We can actually plug that in so you can mount your other accessories because this isn't gonna come with the roof rack, you'll have to buy that separately. Even if we didn't have the roof rack up here, we're still gonna have a pretty seamless design to the top. It's just gonna look very clean and nice. And when you are ready to put your accessory or items up here, you'll be able to do that. And something else that I like about this back door is it actually is gonna be wired to your vehicle 'cause this whole to of cover is just gonna be electrically connected to the truck itself, which is kind of neat, especially with this back door. So when I actually locked this up. I won't be able to really open this into place. And if I hit the unlock button though, this is gonna allow me to open this right up, then access the back. And that's also gonna be wired to the third light on here too. So it just makes using this a lot more convenient and it definitely feels a lot more OEM this way. So let's move over to the construction. So some very heavy duty toppers out there that are made of steel, this is actually gonna be made of aluminum and I like that for a few reasons. One, it's gonna make it more weather resistant. It's gonna make it more light duty, but it's still, it's gonna retain that heavy weight capacity 'cause it's gonna be double walled. It's very sturdy aluminum that's gonna have a weight capacity of up to 300 pounds dynamic and 700 pounds statically. That 700 pounds is gonna be great for when you do plan on doing any type of rooftop camping, making sure this stays very sturdy that whole night you stay up there. And below we're gonna have this very seamless weather stripping that goes all the way down and this is actually giving us a great fit today. It's keeping out any of that water, any of that dust or grime from getting inside the interior of our vehicle and on the back of our vehicle. This is a prime example of a lot of that dirt and grime being kicked up. You can tell this has been taken out on the gravel road a few times, but if I open up my door, you can tell that that's not getting through here. Really, you can see this line of where it was, where the door is actually sitting, and right here there's maybe a couple pieces. This is more so just falling off from when I opened the door initially. But when we look inside of our truck, you can tell we don't have any of the same type of dirt and grime getting in here. So something else I wanted to point out is gonna be how this is gonna be secured to your bed since we have all these doors open. And what's nice about it is it's gonna be a drill free installation. The way it's gonna work is we're actually gonna have three clamps on either side. This is just gonna grab onto the cap and that's gonna grab onto the bed rail too and sense them together. You're gonna have three per side, which really makes it a lot easier to deal with rather than doing any type of drilling. The more difficult process is just gonna be the wiring, hooking it up to your vehicle. But if you actually watch some of our videos on our website, we'll help you out with that. Now overall, I think this is an excellent choice for a topper, especially if you are looking for something that's gonna have those unique features where you can mount things to the top of your roof. So you can put that rooftop tent up there and if you're looking for the just ease of use and securement that this offers. Now you also can get a lot of weather protection from this too. But if that's the only thing you're looking for, then I might actually recommend the soft toppers. Like I said earlier, those are just gonna be basic for just keeping your items nice and dry and keeping anyone from really looking at 'em. But you're gonna be missing out on a lot of the unique features that this has. Like I said, you can put things on top of your roof. Just gonna be really easy opening up either side and this really just does give us this nice OEM finish that also kind of has that rugged look to it too.
