When you hitch up a trailer or haul a bed full of gear, the rear end shouldn’t sag. The Hellwig EZ-990 Helper Springs add up to 2,000 lbs of load leveling capacity above your factory leaf springs to prevent squat and keep your truck level. Staying level means steadier braking, more predictable steering, and headlight aim that stays where it should, even when the back is packed with weight.
Heavy loads can make your truck lean through turns or bounce over dips. These custom helper springs flex with your existing leaf springs to limit body roll and sway while keeping the ride stable. Each side can be adjusted independently to balance uneven cargo, so whether one side is heavier or not, you stay smooth and controlled on the road.
You don’t need a lift or fancy tools to get real suspension help. The EZ-990’s bolt-on design mounts above your factory leaf springs using included hardware and step-bracket style leaves that clear factory components. It’s a straightforward install that fits right into a DIY setup, letting you fine-tune support with simple U-bolt adjustments for different loads.
A helper spring only works if it lasts through years of towing and hauling. The Hellwig EZ-990 is made from durable steel with a silver vein hammer tone powder coat finish that resists corrosion and keeps it looking good after long miles in tough conditions. That strength helps extend the life of your factory suspension, tires, and brakes by sharing the load every time you hook up or haul heavy gear.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Hellwig EZ-990 above-axle helper spring set. These are custom helper springs that will bolt on above your factory leaf springs on your vehicle. They're gonna help to reduce your sway and body roll, as well as prevent sagging when you're towing or hauling your heavy loads. Now, these are designed specifically to fit your 2002 through 2008 Dodge Ram 1500. So because these are designed specifically for your RAM, it is gonna be a very simple install.
It's just gonna bolt above your factory leaf springs. All the mounting hardware is included. They also include instructions to walk you through that installation process, make sure that everything's installed properly for you. One thing to note is you do not want to install these on vehicles that have composite or plastic leaf springs as these are gonna be more durable than your composite springs so it could potentially cause damage. But these springs will flex with the factory leaf springs to help limit bouncing while also providing optimal stability.
They are going to have a weight capacity of 2,000 pounds. Now, when you hear that, it's very tempting to think that means it's going to increase your vehicle's weight-carrying capacity by 2,000 pounds. And that's not the case. It's not going to increase your weight-carrying capacity. It's really just there to help support your factory suspension system.
So think of it less like a second set of hands that's helping you lift more weight. Think of it more like a back brace. So it's there to help take some of that strain off your factory suspension, help to extend the life of your factory suspension, of your tires and your brakes, those sort of things. When you compare these to say airbags which seems to be what most people are most familiar with when you talk about suspension enhancement, airbags do a great job of giving you a lot of control. So you can add air if you need a little bit more support or you can let air out if you've got a lighter load and you need less engagement.
These aren't gonna give you a whole lot of adjustability. You can tighten down the U-bolts on the side here and that will allow you a little bit of adjustability. But really, if you are looking to have more control, I would recommend airbags for you. If you're looking for more of just a kind of install it, set it and forget it sort of set up, I think this is gonna be a better way to go for you. So you don't have to worry about how much air pressure you have in your bags, leaks and that sort of thing. And these are made here in the USA of a very durable steel construction, so they are gonna have a nice long lasting performance for you. This does have a silver vein hammer tone powder coat finish that's gonna help prevent corrosion. So again, make sure that you get a nice long lasting performance. I do wanna point out that I have these offset just so you can see this back spring better. When you actually get them installed, they will be at the same point so they're not gonna be installed offset, but I just wanted to point that out for you. These do come with a lifetime warranty so if you we're to have any issues with them, you're more than welcome to reach out to us here at etrailer.com. We're always happy to work with our customers, make sure you're getting good quality products and having a good experience. So overall, if you're wanting to help to improve your RAM's suspension system, this is gonna be a great way to go. And that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.

Worked Great! Exactly what our customer needed.
Some of the nuts were difficult to start onto the u-bolts, tried to strip the threads
Well they work great. I currently have 4 of second round of nuts that are supposed to be installed. Not catching. Which is frustrating cause I hand started all but can’t get 2 round of nuts on.
This is exactly what we needed to finish our customer's job. This shipping was so quick. Thank you all so much!!
Parts ordered, shipping box was compromised, missing parts to do the install.
Now i need to fab a square u-bolt to use the product like i planed this weekend.
Completely helped the squating rear on 350xl transit box truck with dual rear wheels. Improved ride and handling when loaded. Rides smooth and looks like it is supposed to.
Ez-990 helper springs sagged with 800lb camper and bottomed while driving over speed bumps unless creeping. Unloaded there was noticeable tightness, almost binding feeling on bumps. I removed and checking options like airbags or Sumo.
These work great. Very easy install. I have a bed slide and a camper top, and these brought the rear back up to the proper height.
Great product. Quick shipping. Would buy here again.
Product seems good, instructions are terrible . Can't find a video with my product for install anywhere .
Easy to install, very effective and didn’t have much effect on ride quality. Mine worked on the lowest setting with a 16’ camper.
These springs eliminated the rear sag from adding a shell, rubber bed mat, and a little gear.
Easy to install as well, but recomend having a 7/16X20 tap/die to clean threads on supplied u-bolts.
Easy to install. It should help stabilize the rear springs when I tow our boat.
The product fit well and installed would have been a breeze if it wasn’t for the hardware. The u bolts are very poor quality with burrs and poorly tolerances threads. In addition only half the hardware was the correct size. One set of nuts was too big for the u bolts. The hardware was also low quality. In my opinion it should have all been grade 8 corrosion resistant hardware and it is much lower grade. I ended up having to buy all new hardware to be able to install at an additional cost. Now that it is installed the product works fantastic. Just be aware you may need to purchase extra hardware to get it installed.
Helper springs made my Ram 1500 Conversion Van have a more comfortable ride. The springs raised the profile of the back of the van by about 1-1/2", which is not noticeable and the van still looks good. My RV Travel trailer lowered the back half of the van by about 1", before I installed the helper springs. The helper springs should enhance the ride of the van.
The springs lifted my Tacoma with a cap about an inch higher. It would have been more helpful if the directions indicated that a C-Clamp would be useful to compress the spring ends to allow the u-bolts to be installed. The directions also indicated the long end of the spring should face forward. I measured the spring from the end to the hole and this was the same either way, so was confusing. I purchased longer axle u-bolts since the added thickness of this extra spring made the factory u-bolts too short IMO. I feel that should have been part of this kit. Lastly, the u-bolt on the driver's side did not need to be installed sideways per the instruction. It fit fine just as the other u-boults were installed. Maybe the instructions could be updated to be more accurate.
U bolts are to long and would not allow the prop tightening.
Hellwig customer service advices to shim with washers.
Poor recommend repair.
Easy install great fit. Readjusted for our new trailer in 10 minutes and working wonderfully.Leveled the truck and rides smooth..
I was a great addition to my RST 1500 Chevy and I transferred to my High Country 1500 Chevy and never missed a beat towing the travel trailer.
Easy to install, does not affect the ride much , worked great pulling my fish house to the lake. I showed my helper springs to one of my customers, gave him the part number for his truck and he ordered them from e-trailer today. Great product.
It worked perfectly for my needs. It helped my 2011 Silverado from sagging too much without raising the backend of the truck much (1/4 to 1/2) while empty. I can adjust this added spring to have less sag but then I raise the backend a little more. It's at a happy medium. It is easy to fine tune it if I want more or less spring support.
Loaded my tacoma with a portaboat on the ladder rack and a few hundred pounds of camping gear. The sag was gone after installing these. The ride is a little bit stiffer when empty as to be expected but not bad even on washboard dirt roads. These can be fairly easily installed and removed if desired. Hardest part is jacking up the truck to sit on the frame
Way better than expected. Huge difference in the rear suspension. It’s almost like having a sway bar.
Too early to report on performance as only installed for a week.
The instructions need more detail. There are different thickness of ubolt bars. Also there were different widths of nuts, even though the nuts would thread on either length of bolts.
The instructions also state place the longer edge of the leaf to the front. Why not just mark it as front since this product had less than a 1/2" length difference.
quality product
