Whereas belt-driven fans use up power from the engine to turn, electric fans do not, thus removing any unnecessary load and increasing both fuel economy and horsepower. In addition, you do not have to worry about an electric fan's slowing down at low RPM, as many belt-driven fans do, so you are guaranteed sufficient airflow regardless of the vehicle speed.
Before purchasing an electric fan, be sure to determine the CFM (cubic feet per minute) requirements for your engine. And remember, engines that have been modified or vehicles often used for towing may require additional CFM. There is no limit to the number of fans you can install, as long they all fit appropriately and are mounted on the same side of your radiator so that they do not cancel each other out.
Two types of turn-on sources are available for this fan. The Derale Lighted On/Off Switch for Electric Fans (D16740) allows for manual control of your fan so that you can choose when to turn it on and off. Thermostatic controls, on the other hand, send a signal to the fan, directing it to shut off when fluid temperatures reach an appropriate level, thus saving power. Once the temperature climbs again and additional cooling is needed, the fan is automatically turned back on. Thermostat switches can be single-stage with pre-set temperatures - D16735, D16738, D16739, D16720 and D16721 - or adjustable - D16778 and D16779.

Today we'll be taking a look at the Derale Nine Inch Tornado Electric Fan.This is going to help to make your vehicle run more smoothly, increase your overall fuel economy and your overall performance, since this is going to help to cool down our engine, our fluids, and make sure that everything keeps from overheating.A lot of times whenever you're towing with a vehicle, it can cause some extra strain on that engine, cause fluids to overheat, so this is going to help to increase that airflow and help everything to stay nice and cool. It also helps to increase that air flow to our engine, making it work more efficiently as well, since oxygen helps the engine to combust the fuel faster and more efficiently.So this is can be mounted in either the pusher or puller position, that'll basically be on one side of your radiator or the other. And then we'll have our power coming off of there, just connects into the spade terminals that the kit does provide. We'll also have a length of wire to connect there, and it also comes with a lighted switch, so we can make our connections at the back of that. Comes with two ring terminals and a couple of butt connectors and also a quick splice, along with some self-tapping screws. And then this is all the hardware that we would need to get this mounted up.The rods are going to go through our little mounting feet, which slide into the slots on the side of the fan, and then it goes through.
We put on one of the pads, and this would be going through your radiator, and then finally the button would go on the far side and that would kind of act as a zip tie to cinch everything down.As far as dimensions with our fan, it is nine and a half inches wide, measuring from the outside to outside edge. And then going from our mounting positions, it's a little bit wider there, it's about 10 and a quarter inches, and then about two and a half inches deep. Move my ruler down, so you can actually see that. That's going from where our wiring comes out in the center, to the edge. The mounting dimensions between those feet with the mounting feet in place, it's about eight and seven eighths inches wide, by about five inches.This has a power draw of 4.5 amps, and has a maximum cubic feet per minute or CFM of 570.

The quality of 500CFM Derale 8" Tornado Electric Fan appears to be good. The build quality is solid and it pulls a lot of air plus it's quiet. Time will tell how long it will last. Also I would like to emphasize the amazing service and delivery I received from etrailer. Very happy with my purchase and experience.
Installed just as advertised. Installed it using the single stage relay/thermostat (#16735). Car is a classic (1965), so plenty of room to work, took about 3 hours. Hardest part was deciding how to run/hide the wiring for a clean look. I broke one of the install pads, but extras can be obtained (#13001), about 6$ or so. Came on/ went off just as expected. Good product! Barry.
I installed the 5 inch fan on transmission cooler located behind the seat, and I used your 10 inch fan on the radiator. Both are perfect for this cummins diesel turbo charged rat rod. I like your product and service.

First off, I am truly impressed with etrailer's extensive info and product demos they offer on their website. I have purchased several items from etrailer and have never been disappointed. And shipping is fast. Regarding the Derale electric fan It works great to this day. But at etrailer and never look back.
My 1990's-vintage garden tractor had a hydraulic cooler crammed into the engine compartment, so I remotely located it and am now cooling it with your Derale 7" Tornado Electric Fan. The fan fit in there perfectly, I’m glad you guys had the info of this fan online! It was perfect for the cooler! It is install to where it pulls the air into the trans cooler and pushes air thru my condensor radiator, it is doings an awesome job! I would give you guys 5 stars but the cable wasn’t long enough, specially when three connections need to be on the back of the switch. I also wish you guys would have added the 25 amp fuse that the instructions asked for. Luckily I had a fuse and some extra cable laying around to make it work. I am happy with the product and it works like a champ.
