SmartPlug vs. Twist Lock

RV and boat owners have long relied on twist lock style connections for powering their rides. For years, it has been the best option for connecting to shore power. It's been reliable, but most know it's not without disadvantages:

Twist-Type Design Problems

  • Curved pins make minimal surface contact, increasing the amount of heat generated
  • Locking ring can be prone to breaking, cross threading, and stripping out
  • Faulty locking ring puts strain on the connection
  • Wear and debris can loosen the fit, further decreasing surface contact
  • Circular plug shape isn't user friendly and takes some awareness of the orientation of the pins to insert correctly

SmartPlug's connector addresses each of these concerns and does all of the heavy lifting.

Locking arms grab the inlet, a clamp inside the plug body holds the cord, the inlet cap snaps to the top while in use, and the integrated seals weatherproof the connection. This helps prevent the wiggly, dirty connections that increase electrical resistance, which creates potentially dangerous heat.

Since it uses a square plug face, SmartPlug is able to use flat pins which create far more surface contact, further reducing the risk of high heat and electrical arcing. The square shape and flat pins also make it easy to plug in - no more twisting or guessing if the pins are lined up correctly.

Video Transcript for Review of SmartPlug Marine Power - Marine Power Cord 25 Foot - SM96GJ

Hi, everybody, Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a real quick look at this SmartPlug marine power cord. Now, this is going to be a great choice if you own a boat and you need a durable, safe, and reliable shore power connection. This 25-foot long, 50-amp cable is going to connect your SmartPlug-equipped boat to shore power. The 50-amp female connector is going to snap into your SmartPlug inlet. And then the 50-amp twist style male plug is going to connect to an outlet at the marina.

So the straight-in, simple step operation means no more twisting or fiddling with locking rings. The plug's shape takes the guesswork out of connecting. So it's gonna be very simple to use, even in the dark. And the multi-point locking system is going to help remove the strain from the connection points. The side levers with the audible feedback is gonna keep the plug in place.

And the interior clamp bears the weight of the cord to support the wiring in the body itself. The seals in the plug face and around the cord keep your equipment protected from the elements. And the flat electrical pins increase contact area compared to the curved pins, and twist locks reducing heat caused by electrical resistance. And as you can see here, we do have a really sturdy, (cap clicking) tough, thick plastic cap for the SmartPlug when it's not in use. And you do have a light here that's going to light up blue, letting you know that the power is flowing normally.

And then, it does come with a little card going through some of the other options that if it's blue and red or red or no light at all, letting you know what all that means. So this is very durable. The high-quality materials are going to hold up really well for you. It's gonna hold up really well against extreme climates or out on the water. The marine-grade stainless steel components, of course, are gonna hold up very well season after season.

And the nickel-plated brass electrical pins and tin wires are gonna resist corrosion. The plastics that are used to construct this cord are UV- and heat-resistant. And it's a hefty cord, so you can really appreciate the quality when handling this cord. But again, it's gonna be very simple to use. It's gonna hold up really well for you. And it's gonna be a real great investment for you. Well, I think that's gonna wrap up our real quick look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy, thank you for joining me.
