Gas Strut with Exceptional Stability
Most gas struts consist of a tube filled with pressurized nitrogen gas, a piston, and rod. The Atlas Lift strut, however, has a dynamic damping groove inside the tube that regulates gas movement across the piston. This ensures your liftgate stays open when you want it open and shuts slowly without slamming. Lastly, in contrast to struts that only have gas in the chamber, a few drops of oil have been mixed in to help seal the piston and lubricate the rod. This allows your liftgate to move more smoothly as the rod travels in and out of the tube.

Hi, everybody. Andy here with etrailer. Let's take a quick look at this custom-fit liftgate gas strut. Now, this has been designed to fit your 1999 to 2002 Mercury Cougar. So this liftgate strut is what helps your rear hatch stay open, and open smoothly, and stay up securely. And if your liftgate has been maybe feeling heavy, not staying open, or dropping unexpectedly, that usually means the old strut has worn out. This replacement is going to restore that smooth, reliable lift so your hatch opens easily and stays in place like it should. One of the nice things about this strut is it's going to help prevent that liftgate from slamming shut. This does have an internal dampening design.
It's gonna control how the gas moves inside. So when you close the hatch, it comes down in a slow, steady, controlled way instead of slamming down. This is built to work well year round as well. Whether it's really hot in the summer or freezing in the winter, the internal design's gonna keep it operating smoothly without getting stiff or weak. Installation's gonna be simple as well.
This gonna connect to the factory mounting points, so you don't need any special tools, you'll just snap them into place. Your vehicle uses two struts, so it's generally recommended to replace them as a pair so they'll wear evenly and perform properly. This is also made to last. The steel tube has a black powder-coat finish and the rod has a nitrite code, nitrate coating rather. So all that's gonna work together to help protect against everyday wear, and rust, and corrosion.
In terms of size, when this is fully extended, this is going to measure about 17 5/8 inches on center with the ball sockets there, when it's compressed, about 10 and 11/16 inches.
