2009 Ford Ranger - Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles

  • Wiring Harness
  • Plugs into Vehicle Wiring
  • 4 Flat
  • Hopkins
  • Custom Fit

Plug-and-play custom harness gets turn and brake signals on your towed car with no hardwiring or splicing, and no effect on your warranty. The built-in diodes protect your car from electrical feedback.

Features:

  • Allows your RV's tail, brake, and turn signals to display on your car's tail lights
  • Plugs right into car's connection points - no cutting or splicing
    • Custom designed for your vehicle
    • No effect on your warranty
  • Prevents feedback that can damage your vehicle's electrical components with diodes
  • Provides 4-way flat plug at front of towed car
    • Requires additional harness to connect to motorhome - sold separately
  • Includes wiring harness, mounting bracket, and installation hardware
  • 90-Day warranty

Notes:

  • A brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if used with a flat tow brake system. (See below.)
  • A wiring converter (118158 - sold separately) and 2 additional diodes will be needed to retain separate turn and brake signals. (See below.)

Combined Lighting System vs Separate Lighting System

Combined vs Seperate Lighting System

A combined lighting system, or 2-wire system, uses the same light bulb to signal both braking and turning. (In other words, the car signals a turn by flashing the brake light.)

A separate lighting system, or 3-wire system, has the brake signal and the turn signal light up independently of each other. Typically, the turn signal is amber.

To keep the separate lighting system on your car functioning properly while you're flat towing, add a wiring converter (118158 - sold separately) and 2 additional diodes.

Do I Need a Brake Light Relay?

If the engine is off and your car's brake lights illuminate when you press the brake pedal, you need to install a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) with this kit. Without a relay, your car's brake signal will override the turn signal sent by the RV when you are slowing down to make a turn, creating a potentially dangerous situation. Other drivers will see that you're slowing down, but not that you're making a turn. With a brake light relay, you can signal both and travel safely.

The install was easy. I read the directions first which importantly pointed out that the connector to attach the new plug was located behind the bumper. The web site details led me to believe the connector was behind the tail light. The rest was just routing the wires along the frame to the front of the vehicle. The only part requiring thought was deciding where to put the plug.

Easy to find fast shipping good customer service.

Roadmaster

Had to change out the flat 4 pin trailer connector for a 6 way round connector to match the Roadmaster Nighthawk tow bar but was easy enough.

by:

Actually works. Easy, custom connection. Made it so I don't have to string cheesy magnetic lights every time I tow my 2003 Ford Ranger.

2008 Ford Ranger

Product arrived as noted by vendor and in good condition. Examined the contents and was surprised the installation instruction are vague---had to go online to get what I assumed was instructions for my vehicle?? I was not sure of myself to install so I will get a mechanic install----to important to screw it up---photo not available

  • Recommended Towing Setup 4 Down Behind RV for 2000 Ford Ranger
For your 2000 Ford Ranger with manual transmission, it is flat towable but not recommended to exceed 55 mph. For your flat towing system, I recommend starting with the Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # 483-1 which are a custom fit for your truck. Then I recommend using the Roadmaster StowMaster Tow Bar - Car Mount - 2" Ball - 6,000 lbs # RM-501 which will allow you to use a standard ball mount behind your motorhome and will stow on the front of your Ranger when not in use...

Look at the connector that attaches directly to the light assembly. I attached a picture that shows what the connector will look like that you would need to use.

  • Recommended Flat-Tow Wiring Harness for a 2008 Ford Ranger
The Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles part # HM56004 is what I recommend for a 2008 Ford Ranger. It will do a great job of transferring the tail light signals from the motorhome to the toad. It's a completely plug-in-play option and the only one of its kind.

  • Base Plate Kit, Wiring, and Brake Kit for a 2000 Ford Ranger
Hey Andre, thanks for reaching out! For wiring I recommend the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit # HM56004 and for a brake kit I recommend the Brake Buddy Classic 3 # HM39494 and pairing it with the Brake-Lite Relay Kit # RM-88400. These are reliable kits that are either at or below the average cost of these types of flat towing parts. What tow bar do you have? I didn't include a base plate kit because these are tow bar specific so we need to make sure we get the right thing.

  • Tow Bar Wiring Recommendation for 2001 Ford Ranger
For tow bar lighting for your 2001 Ford Ranger you would want the Hopkins Kit part # HM56004 which is a custom fit setup for your vehicle. The connectors plug inline with the taillight connectors on your truck and allows your RV to control them. If your tow vehicle has a 7-way you would want the part # HM47065 to use as an umbilical adapter to span distance between RV and Ranger.

In order to flat-tow a 2008 Ford Ranger Sport you'll need a tow bar, base plates, safety cables, braking system, and wiring.
