How to Properly Measure for Cut-Out Dimension
There are two main dimensions you need to know when choosing a replacement speaker or adding a new speaker or speakers to your audio setup:
The cut-out diameter is the width of the circle needed to ensure the speaker mounts flush to the wall or ceiling.
The mounting depth is the depth needed behind the mounting surface for the speaker's frame and magnet structure to fit.

Hey, everybody. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com, and we're going to take a quick look at the Jensen Heavy Duty Outdoor Speaker. Now, the great thing about getting a speaker that's meant for outdoor use is that it's going to wear a lot better. It's meant for being outside in the sun, in the rain, in salt spray even. This is actually a company that makes a lot of things that are marine-grade, so it's meant to be in a lot of harsh conditions. And if you we're to inaudible 00:00:24 against a speaker that's meant for automotive use, it's not going to wear nearly as well or give you the same sort of performance.This is still going to give you great sound, but last a lot longer, even being outside in all the elements.
So this comes in two different pieces. We'll have our screen to go over the speaker itself. It is a coaxial design, so we'll have our woofer speaker behind. That moves independently from the smaller, tweeter speaker that's suspended over the top of that. So this should really give us some good sound.There is a slightly smaller version of this same style of speaker that we have here at etrailer.com.
But this one, since it does have a little bit bigger woofer cone, it's going to move that much more air and probably give you a little bit better bass sound. So if size isn't really an issue for you, or if you're not trying to fit it into a very compact space, although this is a small speaker. This should be a better one if you're trying to decide between the two.So let's take a closer look. I will give you some measurements to make sure that this will fit in the spot that you want to mount it if you already have a cutout made. So as far as the overall width here of the speaker itself...
Get a ruler on that for you. It's about 5 1/4 inch, and it should be square. So same size in the other direction. So 5 1/4 inch across. The cutout, or the size that you'll need for this to fit back in there, those would be right on at 5 inches.
The depth is about 2 1/4. With the cover over the top, it is a little bit bigger. Still square, but now it's about 5 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches. And the depth overall is about 3 inches. Maybe a little bit over 3.Does not come with any mounting hardware, so that is something you will have to pick up on your own. Just takes those four screws. You can see those four cutouts there in the speaker and the cover. The distance between those, center on center, is about 4 inches, maybe 3 7/8. It's not right on 4 inches. It's maybe 3 15/16. So it's just barely shy.That's pretty much all there is to it for our quick look at the Jensen Heavy Duty Outdoor Speaker.
