Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

T-One Connection Location Points Behind Tail Lights

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in your trunk.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11143894 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Hopkins Plug in Simple Wiring Harness with the four way flat trailer connector. Now this is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2008 to 2013 Subaru Impreza wagons, excluding the WRX and the WRX STI. Now on a custom fit part I always like to recommend to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and it'll show you if this will work for your application. Now this harness will provide this four way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle and power your trailer's signal lights. It is compatible with five pole, six pole, and seven pole adapters that we do sell separately. This does connect very quickly and easily.

There's no cutting or splicing wires. Basically you just locate your connection points that are behind the tail lights, plug in these connectors, one on each side. Ground is your white wire, and then run your power wire to the vehicle's battery. Now this part does include this tail light converter here to ensure that your vehicle's wiring will match that of your trailer. This is a power module. It'll connect directly to your battery, and that's to avoid overloading your vehicle's electrical system.

They do use positive connection terminals to help resist corrosion. It does come with this nice dust cover for the four way, so basically you can just take this and attach it to your four way plug. You can even leave it on there if you prefer. Then when you're not plugged into your trailer you just take your dust cap, put on over the four way and that'll protect the terminals from any damage or from the elements. This part includes everything shown here on the table. It includes a nice set of detailed instructions that describe how to install everything.

A few specs on this, the maximum amperage for the stop and turn lights circuits is three amps per circuit, for the tail lights is six amps. Now I just want to briefly go through how this installs. Basically you just go to the rear of your vehicle and gain access behind the tail lights. You want to start on the drivers side and take this connector that has the yellow wire in it, that's for the driver's side, and you unplug your harness from your tail lights. Plug this right into both of them, the harness and the tail light. Then the other side you'll use this length of green wire, that's for the passenger side and you'll run this all the way over to the passenger side and do the same behind that tail light, plug this in.

You do have two remaining wires, the white and the red wire. The white now comes with the eyelet on here and this is to connect to a good, clean ground, so if there's one nearby you can use that. If not, you can use the included grounding screw to make your own ground. Now the red wire with the butt connector on it, that's for your power wire. That goes to your vehicle's battery, so they do give you this extra length of wire to run up to your vehicle's battery. You'll take one end of the length of wire, attach it to the power wire, and then run this wire all the way up to the front of your vehicle, but you don't want to connect this directly to the battery yet. You want to run it through this in-line fuse holder. Take this one side that has this butt connector and connect this length of wire to it. The other side you can see has the eyelet on it. That'll connect to the vehicle's battery post, and then just pop open your cap, take the included 15 amp fuse, install it right into your fuse holder, put your cap back on and your system's all ready to go. Now they do include some extra cable ties for attaching down your power convert. You don't want that bouncing around, so you can attach that down to a flat surface. You can use those ties also to take up any slack in the wiring. The other nice thing is they do include this nice packet of terminal grease, or dielectric grease. With that you want to apply that to all your electrical connections. When you make your electrical connections, put some grease on there, even on the four way, and that'll help it resist corrosion. That should do it for the review on the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Wiring Harness with the four way flat trailer connector.

  • Does Hot Lead Have to be Run to Vehicle Battery
You can only run a hot lead to the vehicle battery when installing a trailer wiring harness like the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # HM11143894 on a 2011 Subaru Impreza Wagon. You need to run a hot lead to the battery because this is the only way to ensure your car's wiring is not otherwise affected.
