Installation

To install this lock simply insert the ball into the coupler's ball socket. Insert the collar into the base plate until it's snug against your trailer latch and the holes align with the holes in the base plate. Insert the lock through the holes in the base plate, and use your vehicle's ignition key to secure it.

When you insert your own key into the cylinder, spring-loaded plate tumblers move up and down until they are matched exactly to that key. The first time the key is rotated, the cylinder is uniquely coded to that key. When the key is removed, the cylinder moves into the locked position. When the key is turned again, it will rotate to the unlocked position.

Video Transcript for Bolt Trailer Coupler Locks - Surround Lock - BL7032495 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're gonna take a look at the Bolt Trailer Coupler Lock for the 1 7/8th inch, two inch, and 2 5/16th inch couplers. This is for the Toyota key. Now this will work with most Toyota cars and trucks. What I would recommend is if you go to the product page of this part number, at the bottom of the page it will have a list of vehicles that this part will work on.Now this is a universal coupler lock that protects your trailer from tow away theft by preventing hook-up. The lock cylinder they use on this uses the bolt technology, and that codes to your vehicle's ignition key. Basically what you do is just insert your own key into this lock cylinder here and the spring loaded plate tumblers will move up and down until they're matched exactly to that key.

Then the first time the key is rotated the cylinder's uniquely coded to that key. So when they key's removed the cylinder moves into lock position, and then when the key is turned again it'll rotate to the unlock position. Now, one note on the bolt locks, they are permanently coded to only one vehicle. They can not be recoded or re-keyed.It does use a six plate tumbler sidebar on the cylinder. This prevents picking or bumping of the lock.

On the plate and the shackle here it's a hardened steel hardware for extra security. They do have an interchangeable ball. You can see there's a larger one and a smaller one here on the steel baseplate. This is what will insert into the ball socket of your coupler. I am going to demonstrate with a coupler how this works here at the end of this video. The interchangeable ball, the reason they have two of them, this is a smaller one.

This will fit the 1 7/8 inch or the two inch couplers. The larger one you'll use for the 2 5/16th size coupler. The steel collar right here . Let me just pull this steel pin out. This collar right here, it's a seven position steel collar.

This will restrict the coupler latch movement. So when you put your coupler on here, put this collar over it, it'll prevent the latch from being open.If you notice it has a nice red and black powder coat finish on it, it helps resist corrosion. They use red on the plate to make it a visible theft deterrent. This part does include everything here on the table. The bolt cylinder lock, the baseplate with the two interchangeable ball sizes. The steel shackle, this will fit most coupler and latch styles, and then the steel pin that slides through that the cylinder will like to. Nice set of detailed instructions on how to operate it.But, basically again what I'm gonna do is, I happened to pull a two inch coupler. This fits onto a two inch ball. It is a latch style coupler. As you can see you just open it up to install it, close it to lock it into place. So you can see right here what you'll do is open your coupler, drop it onto the ball socket there and then close the latch and it's like you're hooked up. Then what you'll want to do is take this steel shackle and if you notice on the plate, the baseplate, there's two rows of holes. So what you want to do is run this shackle through the set of holes that will cover the latch. The first ones won't work because it won't cover the latch. So, on this one we'll end up using the second row of holes, and drop that all the way down. Then once you get a hole to line up . Find the correct hole there we go. Slide the pin all the way across, all the way through, and then you'll take your cylinder that you've already made to fit your key and then push that right on and it will lock it into place. Then because this shackle's over the latch you can't even open the latch to unhook it. Then because it's covered there's no way somebody could hook this up and tow your trailer away. Just to remove it again you'll just put your key in, take off the lock, slide the steel pin out, remove the shackle, open the latch, and then you can unhook your trailer just like that. So it's a pretty simple hookup. But that should do it for the review on the Bolt Trailer Coupler Lock for 1 7/8th inch, two inch, and 2 5/16's inch couplers for the Toyota key.

My 2010 Airstream trailer coupler has a curled lip on the collar which widens as you move toward the trailer. The 2-5/16" "ball" fit well as long as I slipped the U ring through the front slot of the red plate. I tried the back slot but the collar was too wide so the pin wouldn't go through. Using the front slot seems like the system will be secure enough but I would prefer using the back slot. The lock works perfectly with my 2014 Tundra key.

It’s been a year and the coupler lock is working just fine : I love being able to use the same key for everything.

They say A lock will stop an honest man". This should deter a good portion of the less than honest as well. They would have to make quite a bit of noise to get this off. Assembly and installation was a breeze. Lock coding worked as advertised.

It’s tough to review a trailer lock, when there hasn’t been an attempt to have your trailer stolen. Or, maybe the fact that there hasn’t been an attempt is an attribute to the lock? Either way, I researched a bunch of trailer locks. From the oreillys special, up to much more expensive ones. In the end, I ended up pulling the trigger on this one. In part because I have many other bolt products that have worked absolutely flawlessly, but also because I could key it to the single key I use for all other locks. Also, I reviewed some of the destruction videos on attempting to get this lock off. While no lock is impossible to remove, they couldn’t get this one as quick as some others. Couple that with the familiarity I had with the hitch pin style lock of the BOLT and the stainless material. I decided to purchase. So far so good. As mentioned though, no attempts have been made to steal my trailer. I hope it stays that way and this ends up being something that is never fully “tested”.

After LOTS of research, breach videos, etc., this is appears to be among the most viable theft deterrents I've found. I'm impressed with the simplicity, materials and craftsmanship at a reasonable price point. The car key feature is pretty cool in many regards.

Ran home right after the package was delivered to play with it. Keying the lock was as easy as twist.

by:

Very easy to use, unknown how theft proof. Seems very heavy duty made, however the lock itself is very easy to use and seems theft proof.

The BOLT Trailer Coupler Lock # BL7032495 is theft deterrent. I can't say there are any lock systems out there that will 100% not come off.
