Video Transcript for Lippert 1716 5th Wheel Pin Box Spec Review

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at the Lippert 1716 5th wheel pin box. This has a 15,500 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now, this pin box will serve as a director placement for the worn or damaged Lippert 1716 pin box that comes on your 5th wheel trailer. The king pin right down here is what'll connect to any 5th wheel trailer hitch.

This is a durable steel construction. You can see this has a nice, black powder coat finish over it to resist rust and corrosion. And it is a bolt-on installation. It will attach to your trailer frame using your existing hardware and it'll bolt into place along the three rows of bolt holes. Now, one thing I do wanna mention is you wanna make note of the bolt hole locations of the factory installed pin box because you do wanna mount this pin box in the same hole settings using the factory hardware.

Also, because of the weight of this unit, which is right around 99 pounds, you do wanna have a friend nearby to help you lift it into place during installation. This part is made in the USA. And again, the weight capacity on this is 15,500 pounds. But that should do it for the review on the Lippert 1716 5th wheel pin box with the 15,500 pound gross towing weight capacity..

For those of you who, like me, may have purchased a truck with the under the bed rail system for your fifth wheel you know the positioning of the rail system is set in front of the rear axle instead of directly above the axle making the distance between the cab and trailer that much closer. This can cause a problem hooking up with your tail gate in the down position if you have a medium length pin box on your trailer. etrailer has a great chart online to help you determine what kind of pin box you have and if there is another one manufactured that will fit in the same place. This longer pin box for me was a great economical, safe solution. The Lippert 1716 long box is a direct replacement for the Lippert 1116 medium box, but is seven inches longer giving me the needed distance to hook up.

by:

This Pin box bolted directly into the camper pin box mounting plate. Best of all the longer pin box added more than enough length to the system to allow the our 5th wheel to be connect to the truck with the tailgate in the lowered position.

The only negative is that the description of the item stated that the pin box is powdered coated to prevent rusting. The item came with plastic wrap on it and the powder has multiple areas where the paint was chipped.

  • Recommended Longest Extended Pin Box for a Lippert 1621 Bolt Pattern
Hey Mike. I have a solution for you but what your asking isn't going to work. The Lippert 1716 5th Wheel Pin Box item # LC1324791 you referenced fits a 1716 bolt pattern, which is not compatible with your trailer's 1621 pin box. The closest comparable pin box that fits a 1621 bolt pattern is the Lippert 1621 5th Wheel Pin Box item # LC1191191. It's quite a bit shorter the center of the king pin on it sits 25-5/8" from the back mounting bolts and 17-3/4" from the front ones. The longest...

  • Can a B and W Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch be Used with a Sidewinder Pin Box or Not
Hey Alex, does your Companion hitch attach to a Ford OEM puck it by chance or does it attach only with a center gooseneck hitch post? If it's to the OEM pucks then you can use a Sidewinder but not if it's just the gooseneck attachment. Since you said B and W Puck Hitch that makes me think you can use a Sidewinder and since you have the 1716 you'd need the part # RP77FR. The issue is where the hitch attaches to the truck. If it's a center post the Sidewinder puts too much stress on it. If...

I spoke with someone over at PullRite who said that they have heard from customers that a standard pin box that doesn't have any cushion actually tows better with the PullRite SuperLite 4P 20,000lb hitch that you are using. Since the hitch comes with an adapter for the king pin all that we need to know is the model number of your current pin box. This can actually be found on the pin box itself. I spoke with my contact at Lippert regarding the existing Lippert 1716 Pin Box # LC1324791 on your trailer. He stated that you can actually replace the pin box with the Lippert 1116 Pin Box # LC1270271, which is shorter than what you have but uses the same mounting bolt pattern. The distance from the back row of bolts to the king pin on this model is 23-3/8 inches, making it shorter than your current pin box by about 6-3/4 inches. You can take a quick measurement on your truck to see if...

  • Easy Way to Tell Difference Between Lippert 1621 and 1716 Pin Boxes
Easiest way it to measure vertically between the mounting holes of the pin box. If they are 2 inches apart up and down then you have a 1621. If that distance is instead 2-1/2 inches then you have a 1716. The part # LC1191191 that you referenced is for a 1621 pin box. For a 1716 instead you would need the part # LC1324791 for a similar style replacement.

The easiest way to replace your pin box is to find the pin box's manufacturer name along with its specific pin box number. These are both typically located on a sticker on the pin box or on the king pin itself. This pin box number will usually be 3-4 numbers long and can have letters attached to it. Some very common...

  • Replacement 5th Wheel Pin Box for Lippert 1621HD to Provide Better Clearance in Truck Bed
The best option in a replacement 5th wheel pin box for your trailer to avoid clearance issues with the bed rails is a Sidewinder. A Sidewinder replacement pin box moves the trailer pivot point rearward by 22-inches. This means that the pin box itself will no longer pivot in the hitch (it will be locked in place by a custom wedge # SWW-09), but instead the trailer will pivot at the rear of the Sidewinder, 22-inches further back. This means the pin box remains in a steady position relative...

Yes! The various bolt holes in pin boxes, including the Lippert 1716 # LC1324791 that you referenced are meant to be used to help with clearance as well as leveling your towing rig. Most 5th wheel hitches have height adjustment as well which may be easier to accomplish than removing and reinstalling the brackets for your pin box.

  • Will A 1716 Pin Box Bolt Up To A 162 Bolt Pattern?
Hey Rod, thanks for reaching out. No, a Lippert 1716 bolt pattern will not directly bolt up to a 1612 bolt pattern. Even though they're both common pin box patterns, the bolt hole spacing and overall mounting dimensions are different, so the holes won't line up. Trying to force the fit or drill new holes in the pin box isn't something I'd recommend since the pin box is a structural component carrying a lot of load. If you're looking to replace or upgrade a pin box, you'll want to stick...

Since you have Ram Boxes you would need to use a rotating pin box that pivots at the connection point on the trailer in order to prevent the pin box from contacting the sides of the bed when you make turns. You would need a pin box like the 5th Airborne # RP61412, but would need to first verify the bolt pattern of your current pin box to determine if this will fit or if you'll need a different option that does match your pattern. That is usually only an issue on beds shorter than 6 feet when people try to use a slider hitch. To determine if the Lippert 1716 pin box # LC1324791 is the correct fit for your trailer I would need to know the manufacture and model number of the original pin box which should be printed on a sticker or plate on the pin box.
