Quiet, Secure Ride
The 3/4" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.
In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.
Non-Binding Latch Handle
The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.
The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".
Easily Adjustable Design
The B&W Companion can be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you the cab clearance needed to execute turns while towing.
To adjust either the height of the Patriot or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base. The above diagram gives an indication of where to mount the arms so that you get the height and the cab clearance that you need.

Hi everybody, Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a real quick look at this B&W Companion fifth wheel trailer Hitch. Now if you already have industry standard rails in the bed of your truck and you're looking for a high quality fifth wheel trailer hitch, this B&W Companion fifth wheel trailer hitch is gonna be a great option for you to consider. Now this does have a gross towing weight of 20,000 pounds and a vertical load limit of 5,000 pounds. And giving you an overhead view here, the one inch thick dual jaws are going to provide 360 degree jaw to kingpin contact, giving you less rattle and more security than slide bar jaws. This dual jaw is operated by a simple to use CAM accent handle, and to couple, it's gonna be very easy.
You're just going to remove this included tethered safety pin and clip here from the handle. And then you're going to open it and then you're going to back your truck towards the trailer until the kingpin. And I've got an example of a kingpin here, will engage the jaws, and you could continue backing that trailer, backing your truck into the trailer. And that's going to, as you can see, begin to close those jaws. I just don't have the hand strength to do that, but you'll just use this handle then to close the jaws around the handle and then replace the safety pin and clip, and then your kingpin will be secured just like that.
Now you could replace the safety pin and clip with the padlock right there for additional security, and that padlock you would have to pick up separately. The handle's gonna allow you to quickly release, and it's gonna be very easy to do. So again, you'll just remove the pin and clip, and you'll also be able to do this on uneven train without binding. But if any binding does occur between your truck and your trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there's nothing keeping the jaws closed except for that binding pressure.
So you would simply have to drive your truck forward, and then that will be enough force to force the jaws open. Of course I don't have that issue here. So I just wanted to again show you just how easy this is going to be to couple and uncouple from the acting pin. Now this unit does feature durable polyurethane bushings that are built in here to give you a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. So those polyurethane bushings sit on top of these pivot arms that you see right here that support the fifth wheel head.
And because this head is resting on that padded area, it's going to be able to pivot without clanking. So the ability of the head to pivot both front and back and side to side along with the trailer is also going to help limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch. You won't get that with this. Now this can also be adjusted front to back as well as up and down, giving you that optimal positioning that you're looking for. And so as a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you that cab clearance that you need to execute turns while towing. Now on your screen, I'm popping up a diagram there for you showing you a side profile of the base, and this is to demonstrate how you can achieve that front to back adjustment that's gonna work best for you. Along with a height setting, you're gonna get four height settings to fit your particular application, and the hitch height's gonna be from 16 inches to 19 hitches, 19 inches rather. And of course that height adjustment is vital so you have a level towing experience. Now if you wanna remove the head from the base, it's gonna be very easy. For instance, if you wanna remove this complete unit out of the bed of your truck, but you don't wanna lift the entire thing together, you can begin by removing the head off the base. You'll just remove these pins and clips first, and then you'll lift these side handles. And these side handles actually disconnect from the pivot arms here on the base. So then you just lift these handles up and then you lift the head up and off the base, and then you'll be able to then remove the base from the bed of the truck. So that's gonna be a very simple operation. I wanted to give you a lower view here just to again show you how this is going to connect to your industry standard rails in the bed of your truck with these included pins and clips, and of course you got pins and clips on the other side as well. And this is made here in the USA of a gray powder-coated steel. So this is going to hold up against rust and corrosion. If you know anything about B&W, you know that they do build and design high quality, robust, very strong, very durable products, and this is no exception to that. Instructions are gonna be included. I think that's gonna wrap up our look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.
