Recommended B&W Companion Hitch for a Hillsboro Flatbed

Updated 05/30/2025 | Published 05/26/2025

Question:

Hi. I have been using a BandW companion hitch on my 2016 Ram 2500 since I bought it new. Recently I swapped to a Hillsboro flatbed with the BandW kit. However now my hitch sits so high my 5th wheel is nosing up terribly. I did some measurements and it seems I’m roughly 8-9” too high now. I did notice that you offer a BandW hitch made for flatbeds. Would this lower the trailer enough to get it back to a safe towing position or would you suggest switching to a gooseneck adapter and use the BandW turnover ball? Thank you for your advice.

Hey Joe, thanks for the information! That Hillsboro flatbed with the B&W setup is cool. I hadn't actually seen one of those.

You're definitely going to want the B&W Companion Flatbed Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter item # BWRVK3050. It's literally the 5th wheel hitch Hillsboro uses on their website pictures.

The B&W Companion Flatbed item # BWRVK3050 sits only 10-1/2" above the deck height of the flat bed truck it is installed in. This is compared to the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch item # BWRVK3500-5W that sits 16-1/4" - 18-1/4" above the bed.

Please note that the B&W Companion Flatbed item # BWRVK3050 is not adjustable and switching to a gooseneck adapter like item # SHK79YR won't help the problem. It will likely make it worse.

Are your trailer's springs above or below the axles? We could raise your trailer up to compensate for the higher flat bed. You can add this information and any other questions you have in the box below that says Reply to Jerred H.
