How Do I Determine The Load Capacity Of A Trailer With Two 5,000 lb Axles

Updated 02/04/2026 | Published 07/25/2024

Question:

Trailer capacity is 5000lbs. This trailer has two axles. Each axle is rated for 5000 lbs. What is the load capacity 5000lbs or 10,000 lbs?

That is a good question, Caludia. The actual load capacity of a trailer is determined by more than just the axles. Things like the frame, tongue, coupler, tires and even suspension hardware can also have a weight rating, and the max rating is determined by the weakest component of the system. So, just because the combined capacity of the axles is 10,000 lbs does not necessarily mean the frame of the trailer, or the coupler are rated for 10,000 lbs. If the trailer has a tag that states 5,000 lb capacity, this is the load capacity you will need to stick to.

Hey Caludia, did the explanation about how the trailer’s weakest component sets the load limit clear things up for you? Knowing what you found could help others trying to figure out their trailer’s true capacity.
