Where to Secure Bikes with Ratchet Straps When Using Swagman RV Bike Rack Part # S80605

Question:

Really elemental but, where should I tie down my bikes on a 2 bike RV bumper mount? Are the rear wheels sufficient to tie down?

The Swagman Motorhome Bumper 2-Bike Carrier, part # S80605, is intended for use on 4- to 4-1/2-inch continuous-weld steel RV bumpers (not aluminum or spot-welded bumpers) and can carry two conventional bikes of similar length. This carrier is made for use with typical pedal bikes, but not tandem, motorized or specialty-downhill bikes which can be much heavier. The carrier total rated weight capacity is 70 lbs. The installation instructions are included for your review.

The two bikes should be oriented in opposite directions for best fit and even weight distribution. Tie-downs are essential and should be wrapped around at least one frame member and be attached around the carrier and to the RV bumper or frame. Both ends of the bikes must be secured. If you wish you can also place a tie-down through the wheels to secure them to the carrier tire rails.

An ideal product for this purpose is the Erickson Cargo Tie Down 4-Pack, part # 05605. These 1-inch wide x 5-1/2-ft long nylon straps have quick-lock cam buckles and vinyl-coated hooks. If you prefer a longer strap you can use the 10-foot version, part # E01418.
