I am shopping for a rooftop cargo box that will fit both of my vehicles, a 2021 Toyota Rav 4 Hybrid XLE Premium and a 2020 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium. Both have factory cross bars. I have heard that the factory cross bars are too low on the 4Runner and I need to replace with aftermarket cross bars - is this true? Id like to have the largest box possible. Thanks for your help! ps: I bought 5 trailer wheels/tires from you guys and they worked out great

The largest box that will fit your vehicle will be a 16 cu ft. rooftop box. My recommendation would be the Yakima SkyBox NX 16 Roof Cargo Box - 16 cu ft , part # Y95AV. This is a dual sided opening box that will be able to attach to the factory rack of both of your vehicles. This box will need 47" of space from the front bar to the top of the hatch door when it is opened. You will have more than enough space on your 2021 RAV 4 to clamp the box to your vehicle. But your 2020 4Runner only measures 46" which means this box will interfere with the hatch of your 2021 4Runner when on the roof of the vehicle

While your 2021 Toyota RAV 4 has a rack with a weight limit of 165 lbs, your 2020 Toyota 4Runner TRD has a weight limit of 109lbs. Please keep in mind this does include the weight of the box.

This does not change with an aftermarket rack. The design of your factory rack prohibits you from gaining any extra space for longer rooftop boxes. The distance between the front crossbar and your hatch, while open, will still only be 46". This eliminates all of the box sizes except for the short boxes.
