Question:
We are replacing the unit and how do we connect the wires We thought we had it correct but the green power light doesnt work

The Atwood RV Carbon Monoxide and Propane Gas Detector # AT36681 has three wires though you only need to use two of them - a red for power and black for ground. The other red wire is for an optional back-up power source which is not necessary for normal operation but is a good idea for safety purposes.
If you take a look at the accompanying diagram it is an example of how to wire the detector. The red wire will go to the positive side of your 12 volt power source while the black wire is grounded to the negative side. I have also added a link to a video of an install for you to check out.
