Towing Capacity of 2014 GMC 2500 for Gooseneck Trailer
Question:
My owners manual says my max towing is 15800. If Im pulling a gooseneck rv, can I pull around 18000 to 20000?. I want to buy another rv. Which would be heavier than the one I have now, I just dont want to have to buy a dually. Can I do upgrades to my truck ? To increase tow capacity?

Any vehicle's towing capacity is determined by the auto maker based on the specific equipment in it. Tow rating is determined by not just engine size, but also by the transmission, rear axle ratio, bed length and cab style.
The surest way to know a vehicle's towing capacity is to find the driver's door jamb sticker. Find the GCWR (gross combined weight rating) and from this subtract the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating). The difference is the maximum trailer weight that can be towed. Your owner's manual will also tell you towing capacity. If you have any doubt just check with your local GMC dealership using the truck's VIN.
In general it is NOT possible to bolt-on additional towing capacity. Even add-ons like a rear-axle air bag kit will NOT increase towing capacity. That is the auto maker's decision. Accessories like a supplemental transmission cooler will reduce the stress on the truck but they do NOT increase capacity.
